Ensures environmental compliance by providing oversight and assistance to shipboard personnel in complying with international, federal, state and V.Ships laws and regulations and ISO 14001 EMS requirements that apply to the assigned ship. The EO reports directly to the Master, with line of communication available to the Environmental Operations Director and his/her staff, as well as the Compliance Audit Team. The EO is a non-watch standing officer with responsibility for the oversight and verification of shipboard environmental compliance. The EO has full access to all employees and to all areas of the ship.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct, together with pertinent shipboard personnel, monthly shipboard environmental rounds required by Fleet Regulations to ensure the self-assessments are properly performed
  • Assist V.Ships technical department with his/her staff to perform internal environmental audits.
  • Assist the crew in resolving environmental concerns, such as inoperative or ineffective pollution prevention and waste handling equipment, ineffective procedures, or ineffective pollution minimization programs, such as recycling, hazardous materials management and minimization of oily bilge waste.
  • Maintain ship copies of all waste manifests and provide copies of manifests to shore side offices for corporate record keeping.
  • Ensure all wastes subject to special handling requirements are being managed properly and in compliance with applicable requirements and operating line policies.
  • Regularly review the Oil Record Book, Garbage Record Book and Sewage and Grey Water Record Books for completeness and accuracy.
  • Ensure the Master is notified of releases or spills into the environment, and ensure that the Master notifies the V.Ships technical dept., as well as the local, state, federal and international authorities as required. In the event the Master is unavailable or fails to make the required reporting, the EO shall notify the V.Ships S&Q Director.
  • Serve as the ship’s liaison to the V.Ships S&Q Director for all aspects of evaluating shipboard environmental management and performance.
  • Assist in the training of shipboard personnel in environmental policies and procedures.
  • Assist the Master and the V.Ships S&Q Director in responding to inquiries or complaints of any crewmember or guest regarding perceived improper environmental practices.
  • Participate in the development, implementation and enforcement of corporate operating line environmental policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate with the V.Ships S&Q Director and his/her staff to assess the vessel’s shipboard environmental programs including but not limited to: pollution minimization, evaluation of new technologies, bilge water management, gray and black water management, hazardous materials and chemical management, solid and hazardous waste management and spill response
  • Ensure shore side personnel, including but not limited to, the V.Ships S&Q Director, are notified when pollution prevention equipment is inoperable for more than 48 hours.
  • Conduct semi annual ISO 14001 EMS Management Review
  • Participate in regularly scheduled meetings of the Master and vessel’s department heads to discuss environmental issues.
  • Supervise the collection and shipment of waste stream samples, when required, in accordance with established sampling protocols. The EO will receive copies of the results of such sampling and shall ensure that appropriate action is taken.

Requirements

  • Licensed Engineer holding a Class Two certificate of competency or above is desired. An environmental related degree/qualification will also be considered and will be valuated by Environmental Operations Director.
  • Audit experience is desirable.
  • Good organizational skills are mandatory.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • The ability to speak, read and write properly in English is required.
  • Ability to work across departmental boundaries is required.
  • Proactive and positive approach to protecting the environment and assuring conformance with fleet Regulations and ISO 14001 is essential.
  • Necessary training will be provided.
