General Duties:

  • Direct the ship's entertainment department in operating all entertainment, social- and public relations activities.
  • Oversees all forms of communication from daily announcements to publications as well as varying forms of electronic communication, i.e. TV and radio.
  • As the most visible member of the ship's company, the Entertainment Director acts as an ambassador for the ship and Cunard, as well as being a host to all passengers. 
  • Maintains a dynamic entertainment environment by encouraging innovation among the staff, experimenting with new ideas, and striving to present the Cunard product in the best possible way.
  • Responsible for the management and motivation of all members of the department (Entertainment Staff, Production Companies, Entertainers, Musicians, Lecturers & Clergy etc.)
  • Holds a responsible position in the ship's emergency plan.

Specific Duties:                                

  • Attends all executive and inter-departmental meetings as directed by the Master or Hotel Manager.
  • Oversees the work of the Asst. Entertainment Director, Musical Director and Production Manager in planning and executing all entertainment activities and managing all related staff.
  • Oversees the work of the Social Hostess in planning and executing all social and public relations activities.
  • Meets regularly with supervisors to discuss entertainment ideas, the operation of the department etc.
  • Communicates with the appropriate Fleet Personnel Executives in the selection of entertainment staff, operation of entertainment.
  • Acts as a Master of Ceremonies for headline entertainment events.
  • Delivers information on disembarkation procedures.
  • Dances and socialises with passengers.
  • Periodically host a dinner table in the restaurant. This function should also be observed by all other staff having restaurant privileges and closely monitored by the Entertainment Director.
  • The Entertainment Director must be comfortable working in the television venue, as they will be responsible for hosting a daily television show that will be created onboard.

Skills Necessary:                             

  • Good general knowledge of the ship, the company and the entertainment & leisure industry.
  • Superior management and administrative skills, reflected in the ability to run a staff of over eighty, under conditions of constant change, while also maintaining a calm and outgoing demeanour with our guests.
  • A proven ability in staff management, delegation, discipline and training.                      
  • Exceptional creative planning ability, as demonstrated by the production of a full and varied program of events for a four-month world cruise.
  • A full understanding of what is meant by good presentation and the ability to identify and correct any instance of poor presentation.
  • Strong on-camera skills.
  • Good general knowledge of all regular ports of call.
  • Excellent public speaking skills.
  • Good ballroom dancing ability.
  • A very outgoing personality and a genuine desire to give passengers an entertaining and memorable experience.
  • Immaculate appearance.
  • A C.P.S.C. Boat Certificate
