The Steersman is responsible for navigating the ship correctly. He assists the Captain in taking care of the ship and all persons on board and of the safety and performance of regulations stipulated by law. He also assists the Captain in taking care of overseeing order, tidiness and hygiene on board. The Steersman directly reports to the Captain.

TASKS

  • Navigation and manoeuvringLooking for obstructions in path of the vessel
  • Measuring water depth
  • Turning wheels on bridges
  • Sweeping, mopping and washing decks to remove oil and dirt
  • Handling lines to moor vessels to wharfs, to tie up vessels to other vessels, or to rig towing lines

REQUIREMENTS

  • At least three or four years of river ship experience in a comparable positionInland experience on river cruise ships
  • Seamen’s book
  • Secondary School
  • Rhine patents and Danube patents
  • Excellent communication skills and problem solving skills
  • Good German speaking skills (and preferably English)
  • In good health
  • Flexible and enthusiastic
  • Hard worker
  • Stress tolerance
