Position Summary:

The Medical Case Manager coordinates care for crew who are medically disembarked and repatriated to their home country or designated medical center for extended/complex medical care. Coordination of care with medical providers in assigned countries/regions until crewmember has been declared fit for duty, unfit for duty and/or at maximum medical improvement.

  • Manage crew medical care with designated medical providers in assigned countries/regions
  • Communicate with ill/injured crewmember regarding medical benefits and treatment plan
  • Maintain updates on case status regularly in RMIS (Risk Management Information Systems)
  • Work within and maintain information is eseacare EMR system
  • Maintain expertise of medical resources available in assigned countries/regions
  • Monitor, report, and update legal department regularly on case management activity of active medical cases in litigation
  • Coordinate second medical opinions as recommended and/or requested
  • Assign financial reserves for each case and update regularly as required
  • Timely notifies appropriate P&I Club of high exposure medical cases expected to possibly exceed deductible, provide case overview and medical records
  • Review all case reserves monthly
  • Meet with Team Leader on complex medical cases; utilize strategic thinking and discussions to develop care management plans
  • Meet with ship Case Manager and Team Leader to determine treatment location most appropriate on a case by case basis for medically disembarked crew
  • Prepares written summary of cases where complex surgery has been recommended for review/approval by MPH management
  • Negotiate best possible rates for quality medical services provided
  • Identify and discuss cost savings opportunities with management
  • Liaise with CareTeam members on crew medical disembarks, deaths or other serious illness/injuries
  • Attend/Participate in regularly scheduled case review meetings of active medical only and/or litigated cases. Preparation/Review of reports on active cases and Identify case for consideration for direct settlement and present at claim review meetings
  • Travels occasionally to assigned countries and visit new/existing medical facilities treating our crew
  • Organize medical escorts and/or air ambulance evacuations as required
  • Assist in training of new/temporary staff and updating of form documents and EMR
  • Attend/Participate in depositions or trials as company representative as required. May be required to participate in pre-deposition/pre-trial conferences

Requirements:

  • Nursing Degree from accredited college or nursing school
  • Ability to work flexible schedule and a minimum of one assigned weekend per month, as well as remotely to support fleet and department as required
  • Strong independent decision making ability regarding care management plan for ill/injured crew based on merits of each and interpret business /professional documents
  • Able to effectively summarize complex and at times, voluminous medical records
  • Detail Oriented  
  • Understanding of medical terminology
  • Ability to perform basic math, compute, calculate, percent and interpret bar graphs
  • Computer Skills: Microsoft Office, Lotus Notes, PeopleSoft, AIRTS, RMIS, and eSea Care

Preferences:

  • RN with valid nursing license or LPN with valid license with a minimum of two years case management experience
  • Bi-Lingual
