Position Summary:

This position is responsible for developing, improving and sustaining shipboard crew workplace safety programs including procedures, equipment and training.

Develop, implement and maintain, policies and procedures that support safe work practices for shipboard crew and provide monitoring and analysis for crew injury incidents. Track and follow-up on corrective actions related to the Safety Program. Provide technical expertise for investigations into injury incidents (actual and near miss). Review crew safety incident findings and develop new procedures with the goal of preventing future occurrences.

Career Snapshot:

  • Provide direct guidance and support to shipboard personnel in support of crew injury prevention. Monitor internal and external crew safety reports and provide trend analysis. Provide expertise to internal departments including legal (claims), medical/public health, human resources, global security (investigations) and marine and hotel operations (workplace safety execution)
  • Develop and maintain crew injury database accuracy and provide content-based support and training for shipboard and shoreside users
  • Provide expertise related to regulatory safety issues with particular focus on ILO, IMO, Occupational Safety standards, Flag State and Port State Regulations. Conduct ILO safety inspections for newbuild ships and ships in operation. Maintain expertise in ILO regulations and provide guidance to operational departments to ensure compliance with relevant safety aspects
  • Be familiar with safety management processes and develop, implement or use safety management systems consistent with international standards such as the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSAS) 18000
  • Develop and support shipboard workplace safety training programs and lead cross departmental groups to determine root cause analysis and corrective actions
  • Prepare detailed reports on serious incidents and present report findings to senior management and external agencies including port state control authorities, flag state authorities and classification society inspectors
  • Prepare follow-up action plans from investigations including safety bulletins, lessons learned training documents and detailed action items
  • Act as primary point of contact for external authorities on issues related to crew safety
  • Develop statistical analysis and recommendations from crew injury data as required for high level briefings to senior management including Board of Directors and Operational Review Board meetings
  • Provide analysis of data and present action plans related to this information
  • Continually advance working knowledge of safety systems and equipment including personal protective equipment, safe work practices and ergonomics
  • Research and implement new technology for safety equipment and develop crew safety related policies and procedures
  • Maintain professional organizational memberships related to crew and workplace safety
  • Plan and conduct workplace safety meetings and provide expertise and guidance to ensure compliance with company policies and procedures and international standards

Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree
  • Minimum of 10 years maritime or industrial / public safety experience with primary responsibilities in the training, implementation and administration of safety equipment, systems and processes
  • Minimum of 3 years in a leadership position directing a safety program
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred.
