The Environmental Officer’s primary duties are to ensure that the ship is in compliance with all applicable local, state, federal, and international environmental laws and regulations.  The Environmental Officer reports directly to the Master for environmental compliance related issues with a direct reporting relationship to the Director of Environmental Compliance and Injury Prevention.  For all other shipboard matters, the Environmental Officer will report to the Staff Captain.

Career snapshot:

  • Monitors and evaluates shipboard implementation of environmental and select public health policies and programs
  • Ensures that the oil and hazmat spill response equipment is ready for immediate use and is properly stowed and marked
  • Completes waste vendor due diligence surveys and site inspections in cooperation with Environmental Stewardship
  • Maintains records on shipboard activities related to company environmental policies, procedures, and programs including the status of environmental management programs and training which occurs on board, and provides weekly reports to the Master and Environmental Stewardship Department
  • Evaluates shipboard environmental systems to determine criticality of system defects/failures and recommends contingency plans.  Verifies the functionality of the bilge water treatment and overboard discharge systems weekly together with the engineer in charge as per AMOS.

Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Degree from a 4 year Accredited College/University in field of Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Public Health Science, Environmental Engineer, and or any other related field
  • 0-3 years of experience
  • Reads technical journals and manuals, attends seminars, participates in professional activities to maintain current skills and knowledge and to keep current on new technologies for environmental programs and practices
  • Proficiency in English is required to understand and interpret written procedures. This includes the ability to give and receive instructions in written and verbal forms and to effectively present information and respond to questions from guests, supervisors, and co-workers
  • Proficiency with computers and working knowledge of software such as AMOS Maintenance System, AWL, AIRTS, IPM, Excel, Word, and other related programs
  • All international applicants must have the ability to obtain C1/D visa (and other relevant visas) when applicable
  • Must meet all physical requirements, including the ability to participate in emergency life-saving drills and required training
