Position Summary:

Manage the medical care program and benefits for crew members signed off on medical leave from Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Azamara Club Cruises vessels, specifically having primary responsibility for the case management of those crew members repatriated to their home countries. Oversees medical sign off cases for appropriateness of care, clinical management and resource utilization, utilizing independent medical judgment. Determines most appropriate location for crew to receive medical care when medical disembarkation is required using extensive knowledge of available services in ports, designated centers of excellence and crew member's home countries. Monitors globally delivered medical care for quality, completeness of documentation and comprehensiveness of medical records. Develops programs to improve satisfaction and address global needs of crew members medically disembarked. Provides forensic nursing advice in support of crew members who are or have received medical care and obtained legal representation.

  • Manage a team of case managers in the administration of medical care and benefits to crew who become ill/injured while in the service of the vessel with primary responsibility to the case managers supervising the medical care of crew members sent to regional health care providers or repatriated to their home countries
  • Provide assistance, backup and advice to case managers providing services to the ships as requested
  •  Review and monitoring of medical sign-offs for appropriateness and assist team with guidance on complex medical cases
  •  Clinical and logistical review of care management plans with assigned case management to determine plan of administration
  •  Review/interpret medical records and host phone conferences with treating physicians to develop appropriate care management plans for crew receiving shore side care or crew on medical leave
  •  Identification of cases requiring referral to crew wellness nurse management
  • Assign and monitor caseloads and related duties and coordinate activities of staff in providing support services to assist crew members with medical issues
  • Utilize clinical experience and independent medical judgment to assist case managers through individual and group conferences in analyzing care management plans and reserves
  • Develop guidance for case managers relating to medical records management, case disposition and disembarkations practices and procedures
  • Develop/Analyze/Monitor metrics of crew medical statistics to determine trends, appropriateness, control costs, identify areas of opportunity
  • Provide litigation support to crew medical case managers and Legal Department in responding to and defending issues related to the delivery of crew medical care
  • Represent company at depositions requiring testimony on maintenance and cure issues or medical coordination policies and procedures as requested
  • Assist with deposition preparation for case managers who will be required to provide testimony on medical care coordination issues
  • Review and insure proper documentation and completeness of nursing/medical treatment plan by case managers and medical providers
  • Review medical records of providers for quality, comprehensiveness and timeliness
  • Train case managers and medical providers on legal and medical ethical issues as pertaining to Maritime legal issues, our corporate responsibilities and effective risk management and mitigation
  • Assist in the development of medical infrastructure for crew members/guests (healthcare networks) in ports of call, including travel, on-site inspections and negotiations, as required
  • Investigates and participates in resolving fraudulent crew medical claims
  • Participate in hiring and training of new employees in areas such as policy, department procedures, and departmental or international regulations. Participate in performance development and evaluation of staff
  • Identify and organize in-service training for experienced workers in areas such as policies, medical/nursing procedures, and regulations.

Requirements:

  • Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) required or physician preferred
  • Minimum of three (3) years shipboard experience and/or five (5) years applicable shoreside physician or nursing experience with active license
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in crew wellness, occupational health, case management, medical assistance and/or worker's compensation type issues in a large corporate environment
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in quality assurance, risk management and forensic nursing
  • Working knowledge of Jones Act and Maritime Maintenance and Cure issues preferred
  • Teaching experience in medical/nursing case review preferred
  • Ability to travel and maintain a flexible work schedule
  • Independent medical judgment and clinical knowledge and skills at a level to evaluate and discuss medical care provided to crew
  • Makes adjustments to case assignments based on merits of a case and assign as appropriate
  • Knowledge of legal and regulatory issues affecting the delivery of medical services to crew
  • Promote a crew friendly culture within the crew medical department and specifically the case managers to address crew needs in a timely, competent and user friendly manner
  • Implement departmental process and/or procedural changes as necessary
  • Knowledge base of services available in ports and home countries to determine best sites to recommend for care
  • Clinical knowledge base for common chronic illness in order to develop case management programs and assess management of medically disembarked and/or repatriated crew members
  • Proven supervisory experience to oversee staff
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate with all levels of management and employees
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret data and effective present information to top management, public groups, and/or shipboard employees/management
  • Working knowledge of WORD, EXCEL, POWER POINT and LOTUS NOTES as well as RCL specific programs such as AIRTS, RMIS, E1 and eSea Care
