Position Summary:

The Workforce Health Lead is an occupational health medical specialist who is responsible for evaluating, and assisting with the improvement of the occupational safety and health services needs of the company, while working to reduce the occurrence of occupational illnesses such as Cumulative Trauma Disorders (CTDs), Musculoskeletal Diseases (MSDs) and other conditions caused by, or aggravated by, the shipboard work environment. This position will conduct studies on the factors influencing occupational illness and injury, and work with the medical and operations department to develop improved programs for the effective management of the shipboard working environment and physical stress factors. The position will also evaluate and contribute to improving crew health by evaluating the effectiveness of the crew wellness program and recommending improvements.

Career Snapshot:

  • Designs and evaluates new programs and program changes consistent with goals and objectives for the safety and health of the crew member and work environment, including reductions of CTDs and other crew illnesses
  • Develops and evaluates policies and processes to guide occupational safety and health services according to specific needs of the company, including regulatory compliance and changes
  • Responsible for data collection to establish safety and health priorities, and for the evaluation of program outcomes of crew member safety and health
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of occupational and environmental health/wellness and safety information for ongoing employee education and new employee orientation programs designed to prevent injury and illness
  • Monitors the effectiveness of the crew wellness program and recommends improvements
  • Oversees the quality assurance component of occupational safety and health programs, such as chronic illness and injury, and ability to work
  • Works closely with the risk management team, including but not limited to the crew case managers, crew claim adjusters and medical services coordinator to identify and resolve occupational safety and health challenges
  • Oversees health programs such as employee vaccinations, chronic illness prevention, physical therapy, diabetes education, and health screening
  • Serves as a member of interdisciplinary occupational safety and health committees, and acts as a liaison with the Central Safety Committee on each ship
  • Initiates investigative interventions such as walkthroughs or job hazard analyses

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing, or directly related equivalent experience required
  • Minimum of five years of experience in occupational/environmental health and safety
  • Knowledge of related fields (e.g. safety, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, occupational and environmental health)
  • Knowledge of government regulation (flag and port state), and community principles applicable to occupational safety and health
  • Knowledge of business/management principles, including cost and other outcome analyses
  • Ability to plan, organize, work independently while managing multiple projects
  • Ability to use technology to review statistics, collect data, and interpret significant findings
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills

Preferences:

  • Board Certification in Occupational & Environmental Health and Safety preferred
