JOB DESCRIPTION 

Viking Ocean On Board IT Systems Manager

Summary:

The IT Systems Manager is responsible for 24/7 Tier 1 & 2 technical and procedural support for all enterprise systems that are specific to shipboard operations. Monitoring, and maintenance of all IT systems, storage, network, and related infrastructure aboard the vessel. This is to include PCs, laptops, and printers, point of sale systems, servers, network, satellite connectivity and PBX.

The on board IT Officer / Systems Manager must be Global Maritime Distress and Safety Systems (GMDSS) Qualified

Responsibilities:

  • Perform daily operations as detailed in Run Books and other technical documents to be provided during training
  • Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups
  • Verify that any back-up procedures are carried out and have been verified as successful in line with Viking Cruises IT policies 
  • Maintain operational, configuration, or other policies and procedures as instructed
  • Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning.
  • Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required
  • Maintain data center environmental and monitoring equipment
  • Maintain appropriate hardware inventory levels, ensure that all IT equipment is in good working condition, including PCs, printers, point of sale systems, servers and related hardware
  • Provide basic user training and support in use of common PC software and specialized property management software as needed
  • Monitor and support the satellite communication systems to ensure that the system is operating to optimum performance
  • Monitor and support the internal telephone system

Desired Experience and Skills:

  • Associate degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum of two years practical hands-on experience in a similar role
  • Strong working knowledge of IT operating systems, especially Microsoft Windows 7, Microsoft Windows Server and Microsoft Office products
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair PC and printer hardware
  • Basic understanding of LAN and WLAN networking
  • Hands on experience installing hardware and software
  • Basic knowledge of integration with third party systems to include, AMOS, MXP and Crystal Reports
  • Experience with VMWare VSphere preferred
  • Must have good verbal and written English communications skills
  • Must be organized and analytical
  • Excellent time management
  • Excellent attitude and interpersonal skills
  • Must hold or be capable of passing basic STCW safety courses. 
  • Become familiar with the Safety and Environmental Management policies and procedures as outlined by management and the International Maritime Organization
  • Follow directives of onboard management to adhere to all behavioral, safety and other rules for crewmembers and keep onboard management informed of any IT issues and policies that affect shipboard operations in their areas of responsibility

Special Considerations:

  • This is a shipboard position working on a contract rotation of approximately 4 months on followed by 2 months off
  • All crewmembers work a 7 day work week of 10 or more hours per day, this includes 24/7 on-call support as needed
  • This position will report directly to the shore-side IT department head for all IT policies and procedures. Onboard this position will report directly to the Hotel General Manager for disciplinary and day to day activities.

Physical Requirements:

  • All vessel positions require bending, climbing, going up and down stairs and lifting more than 25 pounds
  • All vessel positions must be physically able to participate in emergency lifesaving procedures and drills to include full use and range of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities to receive and give instructions in the event of an emergency.
  • Strong English language skills are required for all vessel positions
