5.11.1 Authority and Interrelation

  • Is an Officer of the engine department and reports to the Chief Engineer.
  • Authorised to supervise staff under his charge and take all immediate measures within the scope of the position to operate and maintain the reefer and air conditioning plant in a safe and efficient manner.

5.11.2 Responsibility (including but not limited to)

  • Understand and abide by all relevant documentation, regulations, guidelines and procedures. Sign copies as instructed by the superior officer to indicate understanding of the same.
  • Report any undesired events, unsafe practices or near accidents observed to the superior officer/s and attempt to rectify them if safely possible.
  • Manage the operation and maintenance of any refrigeration systems including the air conditioning plant.
  • Maintain the log and the running hours for all equipment under his responsibility.
  • Maintain temperature logs and prepare necessary temperature sheets and advise the Chief Engineer of any abnormalities.
  • Update and maintain the Reefer Engineer's daily workbook, reefer plant logbook, running hours record for the plant, repair list, and the inventory and reorder of stores and spares.
  • Ensure proper storage of stores, spares and tools and manage the storage space(s) and workshop.
  • Perform security related duties as required by the Ship Security Officer.
  • Routine maintenance, upkeep and cleanliness of the reefer and air conditioning plant spaces as per the existing planned maintenance system and as may be required in specific cases.
  • Assist the Chief Engineer for record keeping and other clerical duties as required.
  • Actively participate in all drills, simulations and exercises conducted onboard and impart associated training as instructed by the Master or the chief engineer.
  • Will be a member of the Safety Committee or any other official shipboard body set up under the authority of the Master, if called upon to do so.
  • Any other duties as delegated by the Chief Engineer within the scope of the rank.
  • Participate in waste management activities as directed by the shipboard management.
  • Maintain an awareness of environmental and energy efficiency aspects and impacts as relevant to your role, and act as departmental environmental and energy efficiency representative if required (where applicable to the vessel ISO accreditation standard).
