Summary:

Responsible for efficient and effective operation of the entire fleet as a member of the Technical Operations Management Team operating to Company procedures, key principals and best ship management practices whilst giving absolute regard to safety of life at sea and protection of the environment at all times. Responsible for overall project management of operational aspects of ship handovers.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • To be able to lead and control large projects from start to finish. This includes the coordination, pre-planning and execution of ALL aspects of the project.  Pre-empting problem areas well in advance and take appropriate corrective action.  Be able to lead all different groups (contractors, cooperate office, marine hotel, HR, Interior design, nautical, finance, engineering, purchasing, logistics etc.)  Plans work so a minimum of interference between different groups exists.
  • Be able to present to the CEO and Board information on projects.  Be able to gather the information and rework it in time tables and budget models using power point and or Microsoft project or similar programs so to give a clear update on projects at hand.
  • Plans, controls and executes all activities connected with maintenance, repairs, dry-docking, conversion or modification of assigned vessels.
  • Plans, controls and executes all activities connected to class and flag state survey and certificate requirements; build and maintain effective liaison with relevant authorities.
  • Verifies that the SEMS and Fleet Notifications are implemented onboard.
  • Works cooperatively within Windstar Cruises Executive Team to coordinate all information required for the preparation of the vessels budgets. Maintains strict control of all aspects of vessel expenditure, ensure vessel expenditure is accrued to vessel accounts, and take appropriate action to bring costs to budget level. Any potential unbudgeted expenditure must be flagged to the VP Marine Operations without delay.
  • Monitors vessel performance trends including speed, fuel and lubricating oil consumptions, and implement timely remedial actions where these are outside agreed or expected parameters.
  • In discussion and agreement with the VP Marine Operations prepare a ‘visitation plan’ to ensure assigned vessels are visited at regular intervals and report on general condition, repairs and maintenance, crew performance, safety, environmental protection, and identify any remedial actions required. Discuss with VP Marine Operations the work plan, running costs, spares and stores situation and other issues of concern and report on same.
  • Makes budget plans for R&M, Dry Dock, Wet Dock  and CEA approval for the up-coming budget year within given timelines.
  • Authorizes without delay all undisputed vessel orders for stores, spares, repairs and survey within financial limit of authority. Take appropriate action to ensure the vessel remains adequately stocked for safe and efficient operation and obtain the VP Marine Operation’s approval for any unbudgeted expenditure.
  • Liaison with the DPA to ensure repairs of all reported deficiencies, damages and non-conformities are cleared with the minimum of delay.
  • Reports on at least ones a month in Dakota tracer on the findings on all items assigned to the Fleet Superintendent.
  • Provides assistance as requested to establish the root cause in an incident and/or accident investigation. Take part in any follow-up review of lessons learned.
  • Prepares and/or contributes to any insurance claims and liaise as appropriate with the VP Marine Operations and Underwriters' representatives throughout the claim process.
  • Builds and maintains a professional and effective working relationship with senior ships staff.
  • Conducts Senior Officer Performance Appraisals in accordance with HR procedures and plays an active role in their career development.
  • Assists in selecting shipboard personnel by conducting interviews.
  • Be an active member of the fleet safety comity.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Engineering/Naval Architecture or Bachelor’s Degree, and • 5-7 years marine related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.  
  • Previous experience as a Fleet Superintendent in a Technical Department, or previous experience in a Senior Engineering/Naval Architecture position in the Marine Industry
  • Good communication (oral and written) and English language skills.
  • Manage Technical operations aspects of new build or resale handover.
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to engage and interact with people at all levels.
  • Good planning and organizational skills.
  • An ability to develop creative and effective solutions to problems.
  • Financial/budget experience and understanding.

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. 

Will have to work in a hot and noisy environment and use the correct PPE for such.

Ability to work a loft (mast) when required.

Regularly required to sit and stand.  Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
