Description

The Chief Engineer carries the overall responsibility for all technical operations and equipment onboard the yacht, including engineering, electrical, mechanical. refrigeration, public health, hotel maintenance, and safety maintenance divisions. The Chief Engineer will ensure the highest levels of cleanliness, maintenance, safety and environmental compliance are maintained in all technical spaces at all times. With the assistance by the subordinate officers, the Chief Engineer ensures all systems and equipment within each sub-department of the Technical Department are operating correctly and are maintained to the highest standards. As a member of the Guidance Team, the Chief Engineer works closely in co-operation with the Captain, Chief Officer, Hotel Director and Human Resources Manager, to ensure safety and environmental systems and equipment are maintained in a state of constant readiness and the entire employee complement receives adequate professional, safety and emergency drills and trainings. Further, as a member of the Guidance Team, the Chief Engineer promotes that all Gold Standards and Brand Culture are embraced by the entire technical team at all times, and shall have a visible presence with guests, interacting and communicating as appropriate ensuring the guest experience is second-to-none.

Essential Duties

  1. Responsible for preventive and corrective maintenance for the yacht’s entire technical facilities. In order to maintain the highest levels of guest satisfaction and safety / environmental compliance, this position ensures uninterrupted working condition of all technical systems 
  2. Maintains the highest possible levels of housekeeping, cleanliness, safety and environmental standards within all technical spaces through conducting a minimum of one daily inspection of machinery spaces, and frequent inspections of all offices, workshops, and other spaces within his / her responsibility 
  3. Responsible to the Captain for the administration, supervision and operation of the Technical Department, ensuring full compliance with MLC, ILO, STCW, and other applicable codes and legislations 
  4. Represents the company in all technical matters with surveyors, government officials, and vendors 
  5. Maintains accurate and error free stores and spares system. Ensures a proper and accurate inventory of all supplies and spare parts. In addition, reviews all engineering department requisitions and approve as and when required for export and/or for purchase. Is mindful of the yacht’s operational budget and maintain close communication with the Executive Committee and shore management 
  6. Maintains the Repair and Maintenance, and Fuel budgets, and shall ensure maintenance activities are planned well in advance. Maintains close communication with shore management and the Executive Committee 
  7. Implements the departmental business and operating budget plans to ensure total compliance in all regards and guest satisfaction, reviews operating budgets and revenue reports. Analyses established goals and objectives compared to actual results and implements recommendations to achieve all KPIs 
  8. Responsible for ensuring all oil transfer operations take place in accordance with company, international and local policies and with the highest standards of safety and environmental compliance in mind 
  9. Plans ahead to ensure sufficient Fuel, Lube Oil and potable water supplies for the intended voyage(s) in close co-operation with the Nautical Department 
  10. Ensures machinery maintenance is planned so as not to infringe upon the need for adequate maneuvering power and maintaining an efficient transit speed in close communication with the Captain and Nautical Department 
  11. Ensures the highest standards of maintenance and repair of all propulsion systems, engines, mechanical systems, electrical systems, fire systems, life laving appliances, and all other systems assigned to the Technical Department 
  12. Ensures all maintenance and testing schedules are carried out in conformance with requirements in the Planned Maintenance System and deficiencies are promptly addressed in close co-operation with the Chief Officer 
  13. Supports newbuild operations to include work in the shipyard as appropriate

Qualifications

  1. Valid Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) and flag certification for the duration of the contract and appropriate to position 
  2. Chief Engineer III/2 Unlimited Motor 
  3. Shipboard High Voltage Training 
  4. Diesel Electric Propulsion Certificate of Completion 
  5. Minimum five (5) years previous experience as cruise vessel Chief Engineer; previous shipbuilding experience preferred 
  6. Excellent command of the English Language 


  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The Lady or Gentleman must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • All Yacht Ladies and Gentlemen must be physically able to participate in emergency lifesaving procedures and drills. Full use and range of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities are required to receive and give instructions in the event of an emergency including the lowering of lifeboats. Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • All Yacht Ladies and Gentlemen must be able to communicate in the English language in order to understand and interpret written procedures. This includes the ability to give and receive instructions in written and verbal forms and to effectively present information and respond to questions from guests, supervisors and co-workers.
