1st Electrician job description 

5.49.1 Authority and Interrelation
• Officer of the engine department, reporting to the Chief Electrician and Chief Engineer.
• Authorised to supervise staff under his charge and to take all measures within the scope of the position to install, operate and maintain the ship’s electrical/electronic systems and associated equipment in a safe and efficient manner.

5.49.2 Responsibility (including but not limited to)
• Understand and abide by all relevant documentation, regulations, guidelines and procedures. Sign copies as instructed by the superior officer to indicate understanding of the same.
• Report any undesired events, unsafe practices or near accidents observed to the superior officer/s and attempt to rectify them if safely possible.
• Perform security related duties as required by the Ship Security Officer.
• Perform all duties as assigned by the chief electrician and Chief Engineer. Main ones being, but not limited to the ones listed below:
o Responsible of maintenance of electrical equipment and automation in engine room, steering gear, thrusters. Keep in good condition all equipment indications and signalizations.
o Monitoring of insulation faults on 440V/220V/110V/24V systems. Close work with all Engineers on duty to rectify the daily issues coming from Valmarine control system
o Take the readings of Cathodic and Antifouling Protection daily (report to Ch/Electrician on the end of the month by filling the log).
o Update maintenance work, and ordering the spare parts
o To work in close relation with staff engineer in all engine room maintenance
o Carry out installation, maintenance and repairs on electrical and electronics systems and machinery both in the Engine room and elsewhere as directed.
o Draw up and follow the planned maintenance system approved by the chief engineer for all equipment under his charge.
o Manage the inventory and control of all spares, stores and tools under his supervision with reports on their status to the chief engineer.
o Housekeeping of the electrical workshop and stores.
o Keep watches in the Engine Room if required by the chief engineer.
o Assist the engine staff under the supervision of the second engineer when instructed by the chief engineer.
o Maintain records of work done and testing of machinery on a daily basis and/or as directed.
o Participate in the upkeep and maintenance of safety equipment as instructed by the chief engineer and chief officer. (Mainly for the electrical components of such equipment).
o Participate in pre-arrival and departure tests of machinery and equipment and to be on stand-by duty in the engine room during stations.
o Actively participate in all drills, simulations and exercises conducted onboard and impart associated training as instructed by the Master or the chief engineer.
o Assist in the training of staff if called upon to do so.
o Participate in waste management activity if ordered.
o Assist the chief electrician and chief engineer in other tasks and record keeping and other clerical duties as required.
o Will be a member of the Safety Committee or any other official shipboard body set up under the authority of the Master, if called upon to do so.
o To be present in the engine room during maneuvering. During long maneuvering, to be present during certain critical passages as per discussion with Chief Engineer.
o Any other duties as delegated by the chief engineer within the scope of the rank.


1st Electrician must be familiar with:

Responsible for all electrical equipment in Engine room & Engine casing, Steering Gear room, Bow Thruster room, 

Waste treatment room, Provision compressors room, ships cranes and Marina pontoon operation and maintenance
To be familiar with Galleys and Elevators
Monitoring of insulation faults on 440V/220V/110V/24V systems
To be very familiar with High Voltage ( 6.6 KV ) production and safety procedures
Close work with all Engineers on duty to rectify the daily issues coming from alarm and monitoring control system (exp. Valmarine)
Take the readings of Cathodic and Antifouling Protection daily (report to Ch/Electrician on the end of the month by filling the logs).
Update maintenance work in ships maintenance system (computer software)by reporting, and ordering the spare parts

• Duties: In charge of the Electrical Equipment in the engine room, ROO water treatment system, Scanship ship treatment system, Marinfloc system, Boiler, Evaporators, Main Generators, ABB High Voltage circuit breakers, Automation Valvarine Damatic System.
