The Security Guard will be controlling entry to the ship during Gangway Operations, perform screening as described in the Security Manual, and patrol the ship during nighttime hours. Implement the Master’s Rules and Regulations and ensure overall safety of vessel, passengers, and crew.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage entry control during gangway operations and screening according to the Security Manual; document actual entry times as ship routines dictate.
  • Patrol the ship at night, enforce Master’s Rules and Regulations, and prepare a nightly activity log for presentation to the Security Officer; the Security Officer will compile the Night Report.
  • Be familiar with duties related to safety rounds and gangway security; follow specific instructions in the Security Manual.
  • Be alert during Safety Rounds; assess incidents or fires and act as first responder until help arrives.
  • Immediately inform the Duty Officer on the Bridge and other concerned Officers of any incidents.
  • Be prepared to take emergency action and know the location and use of all safety equipment (as outlined in Chapter 2 familiarization).
  • Follow procedures for Alpha Alpha Alpha events as described in appendices.
  • Serve as an additional spotter around the vessel; report unusual incidents or situations; report abuse of ship’s property or regulations.
  • Be familiar with passenger complaint procedures.
  • Conduct frequent security inspections of crew quarters during duty hours.
  • Attend meetings, training, and other work-related activities as required.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor or management.

Qualifications and Education:

  • An experience security background in at least one of the following: Army/Maritime/Aviation/Police or Hotel Security; demonstrated experience in physical security with emphasis on access control, screening methods, screening equipment operation (x-ray, metal detectors), and training ability (explosives/narcotics detection).
  • Ability to operate effectively in a multinational environment.
  • Strong organizational skills; literacy and basic computer knowledge (preferred).
  • STCW Basic Safety Training.
  • Thorough knowledge of security screening and emergency equipment used on board.
  • Prior knowledge of the ISPS code.

    Language Requirements:

    • Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly, and cordially with guests.
    • Ability to read and write English to understand and interpret procedures; ability to give/receive instructions in written and verbal form.
    • Ability to speak additional languages (e.g., Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, German) is preferred.

    Physical Requirements:

    • Regularly stand, walk; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with arms; talk or hear; taste or smell.
    • Must be able to frequently/continually lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
    • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
    • Must be physically able to participate in emergency lifesaving procedures and drills; full use of arms/legs; adequate visual, verbal, and hearing abilities to receive and give instructions during emergencies including lifeboat operations.
