The Varnisher is a skilled craftsman responsible for maintaining and restoring the finish on deck surfaces and
related elements, including railings, wall panels, and furniture. This role involves applying varnish, stains, and
sealants, preparing surfaces, and coordinating with supervisors on project scope. Work is performed in guest
and crew areas and must comply with safety, quality, and environmental policies. Flexibility to work across
shifts and handle assigned work orders is required.


Key Responsibilities
• Prepare surfaces for finishing (clean, sand, fill imperfections, patch) and select appropriate finishes.
• Apply varnish, lacquer, stain, and sealants to wood and other substrates using brushes, rollers, or
spray equipment; ensure even coverage and high-quality finishes.
• Protect surrounding areas, mask edges, ensure proper ventilation, and observe drying times.
• Maintain and clean finishing tools; manage inventory of finishes and supplies; request replenishment
as needed.
• Inspect finished surfaces for defects, perform touch-ups, and recoat as required.
• Coordinate with the supervisor on project scope and scheduling; perform finishing work across
decks as needed.
• Maintain a clean, safe work area; follow PPE and safety procedures; report hazards immediately.
• Document work performed and update maintenance logs.


Qualifications & Training
• Minimum: Two years of varnishing/finishing or related painting experience; or completion of a
relevant apprenticeship.
• Knowledge of wood finishes, coatings, and application techniques; experience with brushes, rollers,
and spray equipment.
• Valid STCW certification
• Strong attention to detail and quality workmanship; ability to work independently or as part of a
team.
• Physical ability to perform tasks in a marine environment.


Language Requirements
• Ability to read and write English to understand procedures and communicate with supervisors and
crew.
• Clear verbal communication; additional languages preferred but not required.


Physical & Environmental Requirements
• Physical: Stand, bend, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds; climb ladders or work at heights as needed;
perform repetitive polishing and finishing tasks.
• Vision: Normal or corrected vision; ability to distinguish colors for finishes.
• Environmental: Work on board in varying weather and shipboard environments; exposure to dust,
fumes, and solvents; wear PPE; follow safety protocols; may require shift work and on-call duties.
