- Fitter A/C installs, maintains, diagnoses, and repairs shipboard air conditioning and refrigeration systems to ensure passenger comfort, crew health, and safe ship operations. The Fitter A/C works closely with engineers, electricians, and other maintenance teams to deliver reliable climate control across all areas of the vessel.
Key Responsibilities:
- The individual shall have a willingness to learn and be trained or, if specifically requested by the company, have knowledge of the following systems:
- Assist in the repair, overhaul and general maintenance (preventive and unscheduled) of the following systems and equipment (all of these under the direct or indirect supervision of the engineers onboard):
- AC Systems (Chiller units , Filters chiller water distribution, Ventilation, heating and air condition systems in staterooms, crew cabins, public spaces and corridors, Change AC filters, Support AC system overhauls)
- Refrigeration equipment (Ice making equipment, Refrigerators - all types)
- Commission systems after installation or major repairs; verify refrigerant charge, refrigerant piping integrity, airflow, static pressure, temperature differentials, and overall performance.
- Perform preventive maintenance (PM) and routine servicing (filters, coils, belts, refrigerant leaks, lubrication, corrosion control) on HVAC/R equipment.
- Troubleshoot electrical, electronic, pneumatic, and hydraulic control circuits, coordinate with electricians and controls technicians for complete system repairs.
- Assist in dry-dock projects and major overhauls assigned, support other trades during complex restorations or upgrades.
- Provide professional guests and crew support for climate-related concerns; respond promptly and courteously to comfort issues.
Qualifications & Training
- Experience in HVAC/R or equivalent work experience (minimum 2-4 years in a related role)
- Certificate or License/Diploma as Refrigeration or AC Technician
- STCW safety awareness or equivalent maritime safety training (as required for seafarers).
- Basic Firefighting, Personal Survival Techniques (PST), and other mandated safety certifications per ship policy.
- Practical experience with HVAC/R equipment: AHUs, FCUs, VRF/VRV systems, DX systems, condensers, evaporators, ductwork fabrication/installation, refrigerant piping, leak detection, charging procedures, and System start-ups.
- Knowledge of electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic control systems and basic instrumentation used in HVAC/R.
- Familiarity with refrigerants, humidity control, and heat load considerations relevant to marine environments.
Language Requirements:
- Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly and cordially with guests.
- Ability to read and write English in order to understand and interpret written procedures. This includes the ability to give and receive instructions in written and verbal forms and to effectively present information and respond to questions from guests, supervisors and co-workers.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
- Physical: Regularly perform manual labor; able to stand, walk, and use hands to manipulate tools; capable of lifting to 50 pounds.
- Vision: Adequate vision to read gauges, manuals, and work orders; depth perception for precise tasks.
- Environmental: Work on board a vessel in various weather and sea conditions; exposure to noise, heat, and moving equipment; must wear appropriate PPE and be prepared for shift work or on-call needs; able to operate in confined spaces and at heights as required. Full use of arms, legs, vision, hearing, and communication abilities is expected to perform duties effectively.
