  • The Fitter Deck works closely with engineers, carpentry, electrics, and other maintenance teams to support mooring, access, safety, and guest/crew comfort on a moving vessel. To install, maintain, and repair shipboard deck hardware, fittings, and related structures to ensure safe, reliable, and visually appealing deck operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • General steel work activities, including but not exclusive of welding, including TIG and MIG, lathe operations, sheet metal work, pipe fitting and installation.
  • Inspect, measure, cut, fit, assemble, install, align, and secure deck hardware such as cleats, bollards, chocks, hatch covers, handrails, rails, gangways, ladders, gratings, deck plates, and related fittings.
  • Fabricate or modify deck components as needed; drill, tap, rivet, bolt, and fasten parts using appropriate hand and power tools.
  • Install and service mooring equipment and deck-mounted machinery (where applicable): winches, windlasses, capstans, rollers, hinges, and latching mechanisms; ensure proper alignment and operation.
  • Fit and assemble access structures (gangways, stairs, platforms) and ensure safe movement and clearance on all decks.
  • Perform light structural work and corrosion control; prepare substrates, apply protective coatings, paints, and sealants as required.
  • Coordinate with other trades to ensure proper integration of deck fittings with electrical, hydraulic, and structural systems.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, parts used, timekeeping, and daily progress; update work orders and CMMS entries as required.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards; use PPE and follow shipboard safety procedures; participate in drills as required.
  • Assist in dry-dock projects and major deck refurbishments, support other trades during complex restorations or upgrades.
  • Provide professional guest and crew support for deck-related concerns; respond promptly and courteously to inquiries.

Qualifications & Training

  • Experience and knowledge in fitting, metal fabrication, shipwright, or equivalent; minimum 2-4 years in a related role.
  • Valid welding/fitting certificate from a recognized authority; ability to perform shipboard welding tasks.
  • Practical experience with hand and power tools used in metal fabrication and deck installations (grinders, saws, drills, riveters, torque wrenches, measuring tools, fasteners, sealants).
  • Knowledge of stainless steel, aluminum, and steel materials; understanding of corrosion prevention in a marine environment.

Language Requirements:

  • Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly and cordially with guests.
  • Ability to read and write English in order to understand and interpret written procedures. This includes the ability to give and receive instructions in written and verbal forms and to effectively present information and respond to questions from guests, supervisors and co-workers.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

  • Physical: Regularly perform manual labor; able to stand, walk, and use hands to manipulate tools; capable of lifting to 50 pounds.
  • Vision: Adequate vision to read gauges, manuals, and work orders; depth perception for precise tasks.
  • Environmental: Work on board a vessel in various weather and sea conditions; exposure to noise, heat, and moving equipment; must wear appropriate PPE and be prepared for shift work or on-call needs; able to operate in confined spaces and at heights as required. Full use of arms, legs, vision, hearing, and communication abilities is expected to perform duties effectively.
