  • The Turner is a skilled machinist who supports the engine workshop by performing maintenance and repair tasks on machinery and auxiliary systems. This role reads and interprets drawings to fabricate or repair components, operates a lathe and other workshop equipment, and assists the Staff Chief Engineer in planning and executing maintenance work. The Turner must follow safety, quality, and environmental policies and be flexible to work across shifts and respond to urgent maintenance needs as required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance and repair work in the engine workshop and on auxiliary systems (hydraulic, water, sewage) as directed by the Staff Chief Engineer.
  • Read and interpret mechanical drawings, blueprints, and OEM manuals; fabricate or repair components as needed; assemble/disassemble valves, pumps, and related equipment.
  • Operate workshop equipment including lathe, drill presses, grinders, and precision measuring tools; set up and adjust machines to specified tolerances.
  • Inspect, test, and validate repaired components; document work performed and report results to supervision.
  • Maintain tools, machinery, and the workshop in a clean, safe, and organized condition; ensure calibration and routine maintenance of workshop equipment.
  • Assist with planning and prioritization of work orders; coordinate with other shipboard departments as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with ISM/ISO, SQM, USPH, and environmental and safety policies; participate in drills and safety trainings.
  • Perform other duties as required by supervision to support vessel operations.

Qualifications & Training

  • Minimum: Experience as a machinist/turner or similar onboard role
  • Ability to operate a lathe
  • Basic welding or related skills is an advantage.
  • Ability to open and reassemble, for inspection and repair, machinery components such as valves and pumps
  • Knowledge of auxiliary systems such as hydraulic, water, and sewage.
  • Maintain current STCW certification

Language Requirements

  • Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly, and cordially with guests and crew.
  • Ability to read and write English to understand and interpret procedures; to give and receive instructions; to present information and respond to questions from crew and supervisors.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

  • Physical: Regularly stand, walk, and use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell. Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Ability to perform precise measurements and operate workshop equipment.
  • Vision: Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Environmental: Must be able to work in shipboard environments with exposure to heat, cold, humidity, noise, and confined spaces; wear appropriate PPE; participate in emergency procedures and drills; flexible to work shifts as required.
