The Entertainment Performer Flying Assist (STRG) assists the Entertainment Performer Flying Specialist(s) with the setup, operation, and breakdown of the production and entertainment programs, and is also responsible for regular maintenance and inspection of the FOY Flying Equipment and stage rigging systems under the direction of the Entertainment Performer Flying Specialist(s). The STRG must always display a safety-conscious mindset while performing all duties. The aforementioned duties must be performed in addition to the duties and responsibilities of a Technical Stage Staff (STAT).

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This is a shipboard position. All duties and responsibilities are to be performed in accordance with Royal Caribbean International’s The Royal Way, SQM standards, USPH guidelines, environmental, and safety policies.

In accordance with Royal Caribbean International’s philosophy of Anchored in Excellence, each employee conducts oneself in a professional and courteous manner at all times. This consists of physical and verbal interactions with guests or fellow shipboard employees and/or in the presence of guest contact and crew areas.

Each shipboard employee may be required to perform all functions in various service venues and throughout the ship.

1. Reporting Structure

  • The STRG will report directly to the respective venue’s Stage Production Manager(s) and work closely with that venue’s Entertainment Performer Flying Specialist(s).
  • The STRG reports to the Head Stage Staff for their daily and weekly schedule.

2. Maintenance, Repairs, and Ship Safety

  • Works closely with, and under the supervision of, the Entertainment Performer Flying Specialist(s) by assisting with the:
    • installation, operation, maintenance, repair, troubleshooting and safeguarding of all onboard entertainment rigging equipment
    • implementation, documentation and ensuring compliance with the AMOS rigging inspection program.
  • Assists the Entertainment Performer Flying Specialist(s) in conducting:
    • weekly inspections of all onboard entertainment rigging systems, with special attention paid to safety systems and features
    • daily shipboard rounds to ensure that:
      • All equipment racks receive the required HVAC airflow to maintain normal operating temperature.
      • There are no water leaks in any relevant technical rooms (i.e. FOY racks etc.)
  • When working at height (over 6 feet off the floor), the STRG must utilize company approved climbing/rescue equipment.
  • Must be able to work safely with various rigging disciplines including, but not limited to, stage automation, automated performer flying rigging systems, manual rigging systems and various performer flying apparatuses.
  • Ensures that all rigging-related work is being done safely in accordance with OSHA, SQM, and FOY guidelines.
  • Assists Entertainment Performer Flying Specialist(s) in completing all maintenance work orders in accordance with the scheduled maintenance in AMOS.
  • Ensures that all entertainment rigging equipment in all entertainment venues onboard is secured, attached and/or properly stored to prevent damage or equipment loss in cases of rough seas or high degrees of list.
  • Must fully understand and enforce all blackout procedures relating to sound, lighting, and rigging equipment.
  • All rigging-related working spaces are clean and organized in a professional working manner.

3. Production Show Operation

  • The STRG is not permitted to operate any FOY consoles during any show performances; they can only operate consoles during maintenance, setup, and rehearsals.
  • Maintains the artistic standards and integrity of the produced entertainment product as originally designed and installed.
  • During show performances, the STRG will assist the Entertainment Performer Flying Specialist(s) to safely run the produced show.

 


4. General Duties

  • Participates in:
    • various show and entertainment related pre-sets and strikes including audio, lighting, staging and scenery. This may also include groups and charter functions and theme night activities
    • the cross-training program to ensure that every STRG is able and confident to run any assistant rigging track in any of the onboard entertainment venues
  • Works closely with, and under the supervision of, the Entertainment Performer Flying Specialist(s) with the Sound, Light and Lounge Technicians:
    • During repair and maintenance tasks, specifically when it requires hoisting or lowering equipment, or working aloft
    • ensuring that all entertainment rigging and automation equipment in every venue is installed, operated and maintained safely
  • Assists the Entertainment Performer Flying Specialist(s) to ensure that the quality and readiness of all onboard entertainment rigging equipment is maintained as originally designed and installed

5. Coaching, Development and Rescue Training

  • Participates in the existing rescue scenario trainings set out in the relevant SOP and Flying by FOY rescue plans.
  • Must receive training from the Entertainment Performer Flying Specialist(s) to strengthen their current performance and possible advancement to Entertainment Performer Flying Specialist.

6. Administrative Function

  • Attends applicable related shipboard meetings and trainings as required.
  • As entertainment rigging related equipment is delivered or landed to the ship, ensure that it is tested, inventoried and either placed into service or placed in spares storage.
  • In order to maintain continuity of business, the Entertainment Performer Flying Assist shall ensure that accurate and up to date notes are kept and treated as a living document. This document must include written, photo, and video documentation to allow a smooth changeover with the incoming Entertainment Performer Flying Assist reliever. Additionally, will be expected to cross-train with other STRG technicians onboard their respective ship.

Performs related duties as required. This position description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed by the shipboard employee occupying this position. Shipboard employees will be required to perform any other job-related duties assigned by their supervisor or management.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors or Associates in Technical Theater, Sound, Lights, A/V, Automation and Rigging preferred, or demonstrated equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience with live theatrical and entertainment performances.
  • Completion of training or equivalent stage rigging courses such as ETCP, Sapsis Rigging, Chicago Flyhouse, Jay O. Glerum or other equivalents preferred.
  • STRG assigned to work in the AquaTheater (OA-class ships) will be required to complete the PADI open water dive certification for the purpose of supporting maintenance and wet inspections.
  • Successful completion of Royal Caribbean International provided FOY Operator Basics Training. THIS WILL BE PROVIDED WITH YOUR FIRST CONTRACT.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Working knowledge of theatrical rigging, maintenance and inspections including hemp or counterweight rigging, automated systems, winch/motorized rigging, ground rigging, high steel, and rock climbing are preferred.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, repair and maintain automated and manual rigging systems.
  • Basic programming knowledge of PC/PLC based systems preferred. Working knowledge of Windows NT, Word, and Excel. Familiar with current PC and PLC stage technologies and rigging operations.
  • Well versed in various software applications applicable to entertainment technology.
  • Maintaining knowledge of technological and software advancements in entertainment industry.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly and cordially under all circumstances.
  • Ability to read and write English in order to understand and interpret written procedures (equipment manuals, operations manuals, memos, technical procedures and necessary rules and regulations). This includes the ability to give and receive instructions in written and verbal forms, and to effectively present information to subordinates and colleagues.

PHYSICAL, VISION AND HEARING REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical: Must pass the company required medical evaluation. Additionally, must be able and comfortable to work at height (over 6 feet off the floor) for extended periods of time.
  • Vision: Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

All shipboard employees must be physically able to participate in emergency life saving procedures and drills. Full use and range of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities are required to receive and give instructions in the event of an emergency including the lowering of lifeboats. Therefore, the ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds is necessary.
