The Entertainment Performer Flying Specialist (ENRS) is responsible for all entertainment rigging systems. In doing so, the ENRS oversees the safe operation, maintenance, repair, inspection, and troubleshooting of these systems. The ENRS must always display a safety-conscious mindset while performing all duties.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This is a shipboard position. All duties and responsibilities are to be performed in accordance with Royal Caribbean International’s The Royal Way, SQM standards, USPH guidelines, environmental, and safety policies.

In accordance with Royal Caribbean International’s philosophy of Anchored in Excellence, each employee conducts oneself in a professional and courteous manner at all times. This consists of physical and verbal interactions with guests or fellow shipboard employees and/or in the presence of guest contact and crew areas.

Each shipboard employee may be required to perform all functions in various service venues and throughout the ship.

1. Reporting Structure

  • The ENRS will report directly to the Stage Production Manager(s).

2. Maintenance, Repairs, and Ship Safety

  • Responsible for the:
    • Installation, operation, maintenance, repair, troubleshooting and safeguarding of all onboard entertainment rigging equipment; and
    • Implementation, documentation and ensuring compliance with the AMOS rigging inspection program.
  • Must keep accurate and up to date maintenance logs of all maintenance and repairs for all onboard entertainment rigging systems.
  • When working at height (over 6 feet off the floor), the ENRS must utilize company approved climbing/rescue equipment.
  • Must be able to work safely with various rigging disciplines including but not limited to, stage automation, automated performer flying rigging systems, manual rigging systems and various performer flying apparatuses.
  • Conducts weekly inspections of all onboard entertainment rigging systems, with special attention paid to safety systems and features, and reports any deficiencies to shoreside.
  • Conducts daily shipboard rounds to ensure:
    • All equipment racks receive the required HVAC airflow to maintain normal operating temperature.
    • There are no water leaks in any relevant technical rooms (i.e., FOY racks, etc)
    • All rigging-related working spaces are clean and organized in a professional working manner.
  • Ensures that all rigging-related work is being done safely in accordance with OSHA, SQM, and FOY guidelines.
  • Communicates all shipboard rigging maintenance needs with the Technical Director Entertainment (where applicable) and the Stage Production Manager(s).
  • Issues and completes all maintenance work orders in accordance with the scheduled maintenance in AMOS. Any entertainment rigging equipment that breaks or malfunctions must be repaired or replaced in a timely manner.
  • Ensures that all entertainment rigging equipment in all entertainment venues onboard is secured, attached, and/or properly stored to prevent damage or equipment loss in cases of rough seas or high degrees of list.
  • Must fully understand and enforce all blackout procedures relating to sound, lighting, and rigging equipment. If a blackout procedure does not yet exist, it is the ENRS’ responsibility to create one and distribute accordingly.

3. Production Show Operation

  • Maintains the artistic standards and intentions of the produced entertainment as originally designed and installed.
  • During show performance, operates:
    • Stage automation; and/or
    • Automated performer flying rigging systems.


4. General Duties

  • Participates in:
    • Various show and entertainment related pre-sets and strikes including audio, lighting, staging and scenery. This may also include groups and charter functions and theme night activities
    • The cross-training program to ensure that every ENRS and STRG is able and confident to run any rigging track in any of the onboard entertainment venues.
  • Works closely with Sound, Light and Lounge Technicians to:
    • Assist with repair and maintenance tasks at times, specifically when it requires hoisting or lowering equipment, or working aloft
    • Ensure that all entertainment rigging and automation equipment in every venue is installed, operated and maintained safely.
    • Ensures that the quality and readiness of all onboard entertainment rigging equipment is maintained as originally designed and installed.

5. Finance and Inventory

  • Must inform the Technical Director Entertainment (where applicable) and Stage Production Manager(s) of any required entertainment rigging equipment for any installations, repairs, projects or equipment purchases.
  • Coordinates with Stage Production Manager(s) to ensure that accurate and up to date records of all entertainment rigging are kept. This includes inventory, maintenance, guarantee claimed items and items landed for repair and expected to return to the ship.
  • Together with Stage Production Manager, accounts for all entertainment rigging related purchase orders and/or RFRs in AMOS as required.

6. Coaching, Development and Rescue Training

  • Provides training, where applicable, to all Entertainment Performer Flying Assists to strengthen their current performance and possible advancement to ENRS.
  • Responsible to lead the existing rescue scenario trainings set out in the relevant SQM and SOP. Should any new rescue scenarios arise, the ENRS must inform the Stage Production Manager(s), Shoreside, and FOY personnel for approval in order for them to update the relevant SOP accordingly.
  • All performer flying rescue trainings must be carried out in accordance with the approved Flying by FOY rescue plans.

7. Administrative Function

  • Any direct communication with vendors and contractors must include the Technical Director Entertainment, Stage Production Manager(s), and shoreside.
  • Generates and submits via email, to a specific list of positions onboard and shoreside as per the relevant SOP, a weekly entertainment rigging report detailing inspection observations.
  • Completes any other required shipboard voyage reports.
  • Attends applicable related shipboard meetings and trainings as required.
  • If any changes are made to any flying sequences (typically during cast change-over), these changes must be noted and included in the ENRS handover notes.
  • As entertainment rigging equipment is delivered to the ship, ensure that it is tested, inventoried and either placed into service or placed in spares storage.
  • Takes the lead on the risk assessment for any task requiring work at height and ensures that the necessary JSA and work aloft permits are created in accordance with the applicable SQM policies.
  • Ensures that a complete set of updated schematics and drawings for the entertainment rigging systems in each entertainment venue is readily accessible to the other technicians.
  • Working with the Technical Director Entertainment and Stage Production Manager(s), ensures that regular data backups are made of all show files and that these are stored securely according to policy.
  • In order to maintain continuity of business, the ENRS shall ensure that accurate and up to date notes are kept and treated as a living document. This document must include written, photo, and video documentation to allow a smooth changeover with the incoming ENRS reliever. Additionally, will be expected to cross-train with other ENRS onboard their respective ship.

Shipboard employees will be required to perform any other job-related duties assigned by their supervisor or management.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum 3 years entertainment or theatrical technology work or equivalent, including industrial automation, demonstrated performer flying experience, carpentry, and electrical/control systems preferred.
  • Successful completion of Royal Caribbean International provided FOY Operator Basics Training.
  • Completion of training or equivalent stage rigging courses such as ETCP, Sapsis Rigging, Chicago Flyhouse, Jay O. Glerum or other equivalents preferred.
  • Riggers assigned to work in the Aquatheater on the OA-class ships will be required to complete the PADI open water dive certification for the purpose of supporting maintenance and wet inspections.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Working knowledge of theatrical rigging, maintenance and inspections including hemp or counterweight rigging, automated systems, winch/motorized rigging, ground rigging, high steel, and rock climbing are preferred. Must possess basic rope / wire rope abilities such as identifying rope / wire rope types and inspection, basic knots, use of rigging hardware.
  • Must have had fall arrest training and ability to demonstrate use of fall arrest.
  • Must have had Lift training such as aerial work platforms and articulated booms and can ability to demonstrate their use.Ability to troubleshoot, repair and maintain automated and manual rigging systems.
  • Basic programming knowledge of PC/PLC based systems. Working knowledge of Windows NT, Word, and Excel. Familiar with current PC and PLC stage technologies and rigging operations.
  • Well versed in various software applications applicable to entertainment technology.
  • Maintaining knowledge of technological and software advancements in entertainment industry.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly and cordially under all circumstances.
  • Ability to read and write English in order to understand and interpret written procedures (equipment manuals, operations manuals, memos, technical procedures and necessary rules and regulations). This includes the ability to give and receive instructions in written and verbal forms, and to effectively present information to subordinates and colleagues.

PHYSICAL, VISION AND HEARING REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical: Must pass the company required medical evaluation. Additionally, must be able and comfortable to work at height (over 6 feet off the floor) for extended periods of time.
  • Vision: Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

All shipboard employees must be physically able to participate in emergency life saving procedures and drills. Full use and range of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities are required to receive and give instructions in the event of an emergency including the lowering of lifeboats. Therefore, the ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds is necessary.
