Description
This position supports Princess ships by delivering occupational safety advisory support to shipboard management. This includes assisting in the implementation of safety initiatives, conducting in-depth assessments, delivering targeted training, and performing incident analysis. The role is central to reducing crew and guest injuries and incidents and enhancing the fleet’s safety culture.
The Occupational Safety Advisor (OSA) is responsible for planning, executing, and following up on shipboard safety initiatives, including coordinating travel and logistics for visits and training. The OSA holds authority to stop work and condemn unsafe practices or equipment, and includes recommending corrective actions and escalating safety concerns to shipboard leadership and the shoreside Safety team. This role requires adaptability in dynamic operational environments, with frequent travel and the ability build strong, collaborative relationships - particularly with the Staff Captain and Heads of Department- to ensure alignment, accountability and continuity of safety efforts. The OSA interprets safety data and observations into actionable insights, tailoring standardized assessment protocols to each vessel’s unique risk profile and operational context. Beyond compliance, the OSA serves as a coach and mentor—empowering shipboard teams to take ownership of safety and embed it into daily operations, thereby reinforcing a proactive safety culture across the fleet.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive OHS assessments tailored to ship-specific risks, including walkthroughs, interviews, documentation reviews, and floor friction testing.
- Analyze injury and audit data to identify trends, perform root cause analysis, and collaborate with shipboard teams to develop corrective action plans.
- Deliver targeted safety training sessions based on ship needs, including but not limited to: Working at Height, Permit to Work, Confined Space Entry, Chemical Management, and Risk Assessment.
- Coordinate and execute ship visits, including pre-visit planning, on-site execution, and post-visit reporting and follow-up through operational meetings.
- Engage with shipboard leadership and department heads to support safety ownership, facilitate toolbox discussions, and reinforce proactive safety behaviors.
- Support incident investigations and provide technical guidance on hazard mitigation, equipment safety, and compliance with maritime safety standards.
- Collaborate with the shoreside Safety team on program development, continuous improvement initiatives, and alignment of fleet-wide safety goals.
- Maintain professional development through ongoing training and stay current with evolving OHS regulations, tools, and best practices.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Adheres to Corporate Policies and Procedures, including Code of Conduct, Audit Procedures and any control related responsibility for financial data entered, stored, or reported via business systems within employee’s control.
Skills Knowledge and Expertise
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities needed:
- Familiarity with Flag State, SOLAS, IMO, ILO rules.
- Strong project management and communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to work well under pressure and travel flexibly.
- Communication and interpersonal skills, motivation, adaptability, and ability to foster professional relationships in diverse environments.

HESS Responsibilities:

- Attend HESS training & conduct risk assessments where required
- Demonstrate HESS leadership in accordance with our Heroes of Safe & Well programme
Essential/Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field (maritime, technical, management) or equivalent experience.
- Occupational Health and Safety, Maritime Safety, or related certifications preferred.
Essential experience required:
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in technical, marine, auditing, risk, or safety roles.
- Cruise industry or other maritime industry experience desirable.
- Experience in organizing and conducting practical training sessions.
