Your Purpose
The role of Operational Meteorologist holds significant importance within the MSC Cruise Management team. As a vital team member of our Maritime Support and Crisis Response department, this position will primarily concentrate on optimising strategic maritime meteorological aspects of the weather-based routing for the MSC Cruises & Explora Journeys global fleet. MSC Cruises & Explora Journeys is significantly more weather, and climate sensitive compared to most traditional cruise and conventional ships and operates for much of its time in global areas where a typical maritime shipping forecasts are not accurate enough. Additionally, the Manager, Marine Meteorology will play a pivotal role in educating other department members to enhance their ability to assess these conditions effectively.
This role is to provide tactical environmental meteorological forecasts with dedicated support in identifying hazards and developing situations to our crews at sea and ashore, to ensure the safety and well-being of our guests and crew by providing effective and proactive advice and operational recommendations. Additionally, the Meteorological Manager – Senior Operational Meteorologist will play a pivotal role in training/educating other department members to enhance their meteorological/oceanographic maritime ability to assess these environmental conditions effectively.
Your Impact
This role is to provide tactical environmental meteorological forecasts with dedicated support in identifying hazards and developing situations to our frontline crews at sea and ashore, to ensure the safety and well-being of our guests and crew by providing effective and proactive advice and operational recommendations. Additionally, the Meteorological Manager – Senior Operational Meteorologist will play a pivotal role in training/educating other department members to enhance their meteorological/oceanographic maritime ability to assess these environmental conditions effectively.
Responsible for direct communication and coordination with the senior leadership team at MSC Cruise Management ashore, as well as maintaining regular contact with the global fleet of MSC Cruises, including ship captains and senior officers. This interaction is vital for determining the safest and least disruptive voyage and port call strategies when adverse weather conditions occur. Below are the key responsibilities within the role:
- Being part of a Maritime Support & Crisis Response team, providing forecasting expertise and leadership to those working with you.
- Using expert knowledge, analyse and enhance forecast guidance, to deliver services and advice to the customer in a style that suits their requirements.
- Engaging with operational decision-makers and senior customer stakeholders, delivering high quality services, including briefings, and through customer engagement look to continually improve these products and services.
- Provide written detailed meteorological analysis and prognosis to identify and evaluate maritime operations including climate and seasonal availability in Microsoft Office format for all maritime operations and supporting departments or crews with meteorological information and nautical hazard warnings throughout safe passages and whilst in port locations.
- Interpret data, reports, maps, photographs, or charts to predict long- or short-range weather conditions, using computer models and knowledge of meteorological theory, physics, and mathematics.
- Using excellent customer liaison skills alongside enhanced customer knowledge, provide guidance on impacts to allow the customer to operate in the most safe and cost-effective manner.
Your Journey so far
- Completion of a globally recognised Meteorologist Training Programme, with a minimum 3 years of Operational meteorological forecasting experience in the civilian aviation/maritime, or military sectors.
- Desirable - Minimum 3 years meteorological observing experience using World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) / UK Met Office certified equipment.
- Desirable - Experience of data analysis, coding and programming in high-level languages such as MATLAB, Python, R or similar.
- Successful completion of a Meteorologist Training Programme, with evidence that you have a variety of operational experience as a Meteorologist and have continued to develop professionally, hence demonstrating you are an expert by nature.
- Ability to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of what customers from a variety of sectors require from Meteorological services, including an understanding of how the weather impacts them, showing that you live and breathe it.
Demonstrate you work better together through the capability to lead, mentor, motivate and inspire a team in an operational environment. - Exhibit convincing communication, be innovative and have creative vision, persuasion and negotiation skills in order to influence customers and colleagues.
- Evidence of embracing change in the workplace environment, demonstrating that you keep evolving year on year.
- Demonstrate evidence of a flexible approach, being able to change plans (move resources or tasks) at short notice to deal with unexpected events or customer requests. Encouraging and building mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among associates.
Your Essentials
- BSc Hons Degree in Meteorology, Mathematics, or related science based subject.
- It is preferred to hold a WMO 258 or AMO Forecaster Qualification
- Associate or Chartered Meteorologist with RMets / AMS / Other recognised authority
