The Automation Engineer is responsible for the maintenance of all electrical equipment and systems as directed by the Chief Electrical Engineer to ensure safe operation, environmental protection and passenger comfort
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Responsible for the maintenance and repair of electrical systems onboard as directed by the Chief Electrical Engineer.
- Main areas of responsibilities are the maintenance and repair of:
- Generators
- Main Switchboard
- Machinery Automation Control and Monitoring System
- Electrical Propulsion
- Maneuvering Control System
- Must be able to efficiently maintain electrical equipment and not use unnecessary spare parts.
- Must be able to efficiently troubleshoot and solve electrical problems.
- To be familiar with the Chief Electrical Engineer's duties and responsible and be prepared to be in charge of the Electrical Department without advance notice.
- Must have a good knowledge of all electrical systems onboard.
- Responsible for reporting any concerns with the electrical systems to the Chief Electrical Engineer.
- Must have initiative, be proficient in electrical trouble shooting, solve electrical problems and work independently.
- May be part of an on-call duty system on a rotational basis.
- Never work alone in areas where there is any risk of electrical shock or injury.
- Must be familiar with the safety routines and ensure that the necessary safeguards are in place before any maintenance/repair work commences.
- Assumes the Chief Electrical Engineer's duties in his absence.
- Accountable for the correct functions of the Power Plant, Automation, Control and Machinery Safety systems.
- Assumes all duties deemed necessary by the Chief Electrical Engineer.
- Must be familiar with the Safety Management System including applicable responsibilities in the Safety Organization according to the Emergency Plan and Station Bill.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or as directed. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
- Must be familiar with the Safety and Environmental Protection Policy and the SMS, and carry out the policies and procedures appropriate for his/her position.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of three (3) years experience repairing and maintaining marine automation systems is required.
- Intermediate to Advanced level English verbal and writing skills, including the proper use of English grammar is required.
- Basic to Intermediate knowledge of electronic equipment and systems is required.
- Intermediate to Advanced level of proficiency in electronic trouble shooting and solving electronic problems is required.
- The incumbent must be able to work in a multi-cultural environment; also, must be able to adjust to changes in schedules, assignments and deadlines.
EDUCATION
- Highschool diploma or foreign equivalent is required.
- Bachelor's Degree or Technical Diploma from an accredited Maritime Academy or equivalent is preferred.
- Position-specific STCW training from an accredited educational institution is required.
