Your Life on Board
As a Fleet Public Health Officer (FPHO), you will travel across multiple ships during the same contract, transferring every 30–40 days based on itinerary and operational needs. You report to both the shoreside Public Health Management and the onboard Hotel General Manager, overseeing public health practices through audits, training, policy implementation, and performance reviews. You are responsible for supporting shipboard Public Health Officers in managing communicable diseases, outbreaks, and environmental health risks, ensuring full compliance with health regulations and company standards. As Costa’s public health ambassador, you will mentor and guide crew members to uphold the highest standards of health and safety onboard.

Getting Things Right
- Coordinate with their shoreside manager, and PHOs to support, follow-up and resolve operational issues with internal stakeholders.
- Use data to identify ship, department, and rank training needs and collaborates with PHOs and other stakeholders to deliver targeted and appropriate training.
- Provide recommendations for improvements to operations and assists in the development and updates to public health policies and procedures.
- Facilitate consistent application of policies and procedures through audits, training, feedback, and ongoing operational evaluation.
- Train and develop the technical and operational skills of new and existing public health officers
- Contribute to other initiatives and/or ad hoc projects as directed by their manager
- Help us participating in additional projects as assigned by the shoreside Public Health Department.
Safety First
- Respond to public health emergencies including disease outbreaks.
- You assist the Hotel General Manager in fostering a work environment that promotes a successful shipboard public health culture to drive high public health standards and performance on board, following up in a collaborative manner with all involved department managers and stakeholders.
What Makes You Unique
- A minimum of three years of professional experience in the field of public health
- A bachelor’s degree or higher in public health, environmental health, biological sciences, or a closely related field. Relevant experience can substitute for a bachelor’s degree
- Proficiency in English (B2 minimum).
- Two years of shipboard experience or three years of shoreside experience in public health programs. Knowledge of infection control practices and Vessel Sanitation
- Standards is preferred.
- CDC Vessel Sanitation Training, Infection Control Certification, SHIPSAN certification, and other relevant qualifications are advantageous.
- Cruise Industry Experience strongly preferred.
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Office and generally computer literacy in order to prepare reports on audits, investigations, inspections, and training activities.
- Willingness to work on a fix-term contract of up to 6 months, temporary.
