Your Purpose
The Port Captain, Ocean Cay Marine Reserve; manages all nautical operational elements on the island. They will be the technical main point of contact on the island for engaging with the marine pilots and other relevant stakeholders. They will also be responsible for selecting and training tender captains and crew in regards to ship handling and maintenance of vessels. The position will also consist of working with the CTL Maritime and Port Operation teams in regards to ensuring that all marine infrastructures suitably installed and maintained based on design characteristics set.
Your Impact
- Main controller of all marine traffic in/out of Ocean Cay-Little Cay piers, service docks and marina via VHF radio, ensuring close cooperation with the OC General Manager.
- Main controller of berth positioning on a day-to-day basis and during island development phases for vessels arriving at Ocean Cay to ensure all key navigable channels are clear and safe to enter for various vessel types.
- Main contact point for marine pilots based on Ocean Cay
- Regularly communicate with the MSC CM UK Head of Meteorology in order to provide an all round marine meteorological picture at Ocean Cay – particular in regard to sudden localized meteorological events. You would be expected to coordinate with the islands Senior Managing Director and General Manager to determine when an evacuation from the island would be required, in the event of forecasted extreme weather severely impacting the island.
- Be the main point of contact for the tugboat which is deployed at the island
- Coordinate movement of fenders for LNG bunkering operations of cruise vessels
- Ensure that Potable water bunkering is carried out in coordination with the island’s chief engineer
- Interviewing/Selecting Captains & deckhands for shore tender/crew service boats that will be operating at OC and Little Cay
- Organize roster schedule for tender crew/captains
- Coordinate closely with MSC Marine Operations dept. in regards to certification of both shore tenders and crew boat.
- Ensure a general safety culture during and after the completion of transformation works on the island
- Ensure that shore tenders and crew boat are kept in a clean and seaworthy condition at all times.
- Continuously monitor mooring teams on Ocean Cay in regards to correct donning of PPE and ensure that correct line handling and associated hazards during operations are compliant with best practices
- Ensure that provision transfer operations are conducted in a safe and efficient fashion when transferring between cruise vessel and transportation vessel to Little Cay, which will include coordinating with both existing island personnel and transportation vessel.
- Regularly undertake and record inspections of marine infrastructure such as bollards, fenders, navigational aids etc. and report any defects to the OC Chief Engineer, Senior Managing Director Ocean Cay and VP Port Operations.
- Close coordination with chief engineer in regards to the tidal current sensors and anemometer equipment.
- Stakeholder in the marina reorganization project – input on commercial slots, regular sounding of marina at identified locations where shoaling/depth reduction take place.
Your Journey so far
- Cruise Ship Senior Deck Officer background, predominantly either as a Staff Captain, Safety Officer or Senior 1st Officer position.
- Essential experience in the use of tender operations
- Experience in cruise vessel private island operations would be preferred, but not essential

- Fluent English (knowledge of other languages is preferred but not essential);
- Computer literacy with proficient knowledge of basic systems;
- Flexibility, adaptability and team working;
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to liaise with authorities and various departments operating on the island;
- Ability to work under pressure and multitask in a fast-paced environment;
- Excellent organisation and time management skills;
