The Junior Seaman is responsible for the maintenance and conservation of the vessel’s decks and
superstructures. Under supervision, they participate in deck activities according to assignment,
knowledge, and accumulated experience. The role requires a safety-focused mindset, reliability, and the
ability to work well as part of a team while maintaining professional conduct around guests and crew.
Key Responsibilities
• Maintain and conserve vessel decks and superstructures, including routine cleaning, preservation
tasks, and inspections as assigned.
• Perform deck duties accurately and safely, documenting work where required.
• Support deck operations during port calls, navigation, mooring, line handling, and other tasks as
assigned.
• Follow shipboard safety procedures; wear and use required PPE; comply with daily safety
instructions from supervisors.
• Complete familiarization and ongoing training in accordance with established procedures and
shipboard programs.
• Be familiar with safety and quality management programs and follow the emergency plan and
station bill.
• Recognize and report safety hazards; seek guidance from a more experienced crew member
when unsure.
• Understand and follow procedures for handling passenger concerns as described in guest
services policies; escalate as needed.
• Attend meetings, training sessions, and other work-related activities as required.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisors or management.
Qualifications & Training
• Hiring Requirements: Must hold certificates required by the flag state and have basic safety
training prior to employment.
• Experience: Deck operations or maritime service experience.
• Technical/Functional Skills: Basic seamanship, deck maintenance, safety procedures, efficient
communication, and ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
• Certifications: Required flag state certificates and basic safety training; additional certifications
relevant to deck operations are advantageous.
• Soft Skills: Good communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management abilities.
Language Requirements
• Primary language: English, with clear, professional working proficiency in spoken and written
communication.
• Additional languages: Optional; any extra language abilities are a plus.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
• Physical tasks: Ability to stand, walk, use hands to touch and handle objects, reach arms, talk and
hear; vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and the
ability to adjust focus.
• Lifting/Carrying: Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
• Work environment: Shipboard environment; exposure to varying conditions, including weather,
noise, and movement of the vessel; ability to perform duties in potentially challenging
environments.
• Travel: Not explicitly specified here; duties may require movement between decks and areas of
the vessel.
• Safety/Emergency: Must be physically able to participate in emergency life-saving procedures
and drills; capable of receiving and acting on instructions during emergencies, including lifeboat
procedures.
