Your Purpose
The Chief Engineer is the onboard responsible and accountable for the maintenance and Technical assets reliability of the Ship, to the Master and the Company while maintaining, promoting and applying Company policies and Safe Working practices. He/She must keep the Master and the shore responsible person promptly and fully informed of any occurrence in the Engine room which might affect the safety of the ship and its personnel, the navigation and disruption of any essential services of the ship. The Chief Engineer oversees all Officers and ratings within his department, and he/she will delegate some accountability to other Engine Officers for appropriate equipment.
Your Impact
• To manage Technical risks on board and keep Ship and Shore Senior Management informed about plans and timelines for resolution and mitigation.
• To ensure that the main machinery and their auxiliaries, fixed and portable fire-fighting systems (water mist, Sprinkler, CO2, etc.) In the Technical Spaces are maintained in effective and efficient working conditions.
• To apply, promote and promulgate to assigned Team members all policies specified by the Company.
• To ensure that all Engineer Officers and Ratings are adequately instructed and aware of their duties and responsibilities relating to the Safety Management System and ERM practices.
• To ensure the effective operation and maintenance of all watertight doors.
• To ensure the effective operation and maintenance of pollution prevention equipment and the adequate supervision of pollution prevention measures during bunkering and internal transfers, although these operations may be delegated to suitably qualified engineers.
• To ensure the disposal of sludge, bilge waters, oily waters, and exhausted oils, follow national and international laws and Company’s instructions.
• To ensure all engine department personnel is familiar and complies with International Laws and Company policies and instructions concerning safety and environmental protection.
• To ensure that the engineer’s licenses, including its own, are valid, in force, and are posted (if necessary) and locked-in frames.
• To submit to the Master each day at midday (at sea) a report showing fuel and water consumed and on hand as well as the other engine department information required.
• To coordinate with the Safety Officer to maintain the effective operation of all safety fixed and portable appliances (lifesaving, fire fighting, etc.).
• To issue “Standing Orders” for the safe and efficient operation of the Ship, always keeping available a copy of these in the Engine Control Room and Engine Room.
• To ensure that all engine room personnel fully understands their safety instructions.
• To arrange, in conjunction with the Safety Officer, general and partial drills, in particular those relative to fire fighting.
• To arrange for the individual training of the engine room personnel in their duties.
• To provide proactive technical assistance to relevant Shore functions to allow the vessel to meet and exceed the Company's set of key performance indicators for Energy Efficiency, Technical and Sanitation Standards. To participate on a social basis, where duties permit, at the Captain’s Welcome and Farewell cocktail parties, and to attend at a table convened by the Captain to entertain Passengers.
• To maintain a “Chief Engineer order book”, to be kept in the Engine room and the Engine control room, which will be read and the order signed by each Engineer taking over the watch.
• To support cybersecurity experts, IT Senior and ETO to manage cyber security on the ship, especially regarding the ship’s operational technology systems. He will be consulted on risk treatment plans.
Your Journey So Far
Extensive successful experience in a similar position within MSC or other Cruise company. All other certification (including visas etc.) required including Compliance with the requirements of STCW regarding certification for this position and all documents in force at the time of his/her employment to comply with the Flag State requirements of the ship to which he/she is assigned. Computer literacy and ability to operate office equipment. Basic Windows based programs knowledge. Fluent in oral and written English (working and Safety language of the Company) Explora Fleet English Level: B2. Ability to speak, read and write in Italian is a major benefit and may be a requirement. Ability to speak, read and write in any major other languages is considered a major advantage that could eventually influence the selection for some positions.
