Your Purpose
The Safety Engineer is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, inspection, and maintenance of all assigned safety equipment and systems, including but not limited to those located in technical spaces. This role ensures compliance with company procedures, international regulations, and fire prevention standards while supporting overall onboard safety operations. The Safety Engineer may also assist the Staff Engineer and Daily First Engineer or perform engine watchkeeping duties when required. Additionally, the position oversees planned and unplanned maintenance of delegated assets, optimizing resources, and ensuring timely completion of tasks.
Your Impact
You will oversee the maintenance and operational readiness of Fixed fire-fighting systems, Main Fire Pumps and Bilge Pumps, Machinery emergency shutdown systems, Ventilation ESD/damper systems Supervision during the functional test ,Mooring winches/windlasses ,Lifeboats, rescue boats, life raft davits Watertight and semi-watertight Doors hydraulic system Shell Doors (Side Ports) hydraulic system (including tender platforms) Activities related to machinery and equipment under the Marine Department’s responsibility should be handled in cooperation with the Safety Officer Record maintenance activities and inventory updates in InfoSHIP/AMOS
Your Journey So Far
We are looking for someone with:
- Previous experience as a Safety Engineer or in a similar engineering role on board cruise ships.
- Proven expertise in safety equipment, fire-fighting systems, and emergency procedures within the cruise industry.
- Experience with planned maintenance systems and technical reporting.
- Knowledge of the ISM Code, SMS procedures, and environmental regulations.
- Experience in leading, mentoring, and training engine personnel in safety and emergency preparedness.
- Strong communication, organizational, and teamwork skills.
- Fluent written and spoken English (minimum B2 level).
Your Essentials
To succeed in this role, you should bring:
- A valid STCW III/2 Certificate of Competency for ships powered by main propulsion machinery of 3,000 kW or more.
- Strong knowledge of marine safety systems, fire prevention measures, and emergency response procedures.
- Solid understanding of international maritime regulations, ISM requirements, and Safety Management Systems (SMS).
- The ability to supervise maintenance activities and optimize resources effectively.
- Good computer skills and familiarity with maintenance management systems.
- Strong leadership, planning, reporting, and problem-solving abilities.
- A commitment to safety, environmental compliance, crew welfare, and delivering an outstanding guest experience.
