POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Financial Controller, the Apprentice Purser is an entry-level
training position working within the Financial Operations division alongside
either the Guest Accounts Purser or 2nd Purser Payroll with a goal to being
promoted to either of these positions. See the related position descriptions

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Royal Caribbean International expects each shipboard team member to
relentlessly exemplify the foundations of the ROYAL WAY Brand Standards to
all team members. In addition, all duties and responsibilities are to be
performed in accordance with Royal Caribbean Group’s SQM standards, Time
& Attendance, ILO, environmental, health & safety policies and USPH and antibribery/Sarbanes Oxley guidelines.
1. In accordance with Royal Caribbean International’s philosophy of the
ROYAL WAY (Friendly, Passionate, and Committed), each employee
always conducts oneself in a professional and courteous manner. This
consists of physical and verbal interactions with guests and fellow
shipboard employees, in guest and crew areas and ashore, while on and
off duty.
2. When assigned to Guest Accounts - Assists the Guest Accounts
Purser with tasks such as daily balancing of the SPMS (Shipboard
Property Management System) to the POS (Point of Sale) and other
interfaces, gratuity posting and/or balancing, reconciling prepaid
amenities, obtaining methods of payment for guest SeaPass accounts,
authorizing and settling credit cards, collecting and balancing cash
payments from Guest Services and any other guest-related financial
matters.
3. When assigned to Payroll - Assists the 2nd Purser Payroll and Crew
Payroll Manager with tasks such as crew cash payments, Salary@Sea
questions, stuffing and distribution of cash payroll envelopes, gratuity
and supplemental data entry and balancing, foreign exchange
transactions and any other crew-related financial matters.
4. Maintains the confidentiality of all crew salaries, credit/debit card
information and any other financial transactions made by guests or
crew while practicing sound and prudent business sense and ethics.
5. Actively participates in training programs for the GAP/Payroll position
to learn and excel in the skills set down to be promoted. A full checklist
of duties will be provided with the objective of completing all main tasks
to manage the functionality of the role within a set period. Expected to
take on tasks independently once trained in the respective procedures.
6. Is aware of and/or acquires the necessary knowledge to comply with
the ship’s standard operation to assist guests and crewmembers with
inquiries.
7. Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy environment by enforcing
organizational standards, procedures, and legal regulations. Effectively
monitors and makes improvements to workplace safety within the
division and throughout the ship.
8. Attends mandatory crew and guest safety drills as required, including
meetings, training activities, courses, and all other work-related
activities.
9. Performs related duties as required. This position description in no

the shipboard employee occupying this position. Shipboard employees
will be required to perform any other job-related duties assigned by the
Financial Controller or management.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum hiring, language, and physical requirements to perform the job.
Hiring Requirements:
· Completion of high school, basic education or vocational training
equivalency required.
· Minimum 6 months’ experience in a payroll or accounting processing
position within the hospitality industry or financial institution preferred.
· Minimum 6 months' experience in cash handling and an understanding
of US currency and exchange rates preferred.
· Exceptional administrative and analytical skills and aptitude for
accounting/bookkeeping.
· Ability to work independently as well as part of a closely-knit team.
· Ability to work with and maintain confidential documentation.
· Proven customer service skills to interact appropriately with guests
and crew in a considerate, professional, and positive manner by
showing concern and listening actively.
· Ability to communicate tactfully with guests, crew, divisional managers
and shoreside employees to resolve problems and negotiate
resolutions.
· Demonstrable potential for growth into supervisory and leadership
roles.
· Competence in operating basic office equipment, including calculators,
telephones, computers, and copy machines.
· Proficiency with computers, internet, and software programs such as
Access, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
· Intermediate level Excel skills with Financial, Math and Lookup
functions and formulas.
Language Requirements:
· Ability to speak English clearly, distinctly, and cordially with guests and
crew.
· Ability to read and write English to understand, interpret and convey
written information. This includes the ability to give and receive
instructions in written and verbal forms and to effectively present
information and respond to questions from guests, supervisors, and coworkers.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the shipboard employee is regularly
required to stand, walk, use hands to touch, handle, or feel, reach with hands
and arms, talk, or hear, and taste or smell. Specific vision abilities required by
this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision,
depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
All shipboard employees must be physically able to participate in emergency
life-saving procedures and drills. Full use and range of arms and legs as well
as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities are required to receive and give
instructions in the event of an emergency including the lowering of lifeboats.
