Duties include (but are not limited to):                         

 1. Engine Room Operations
Supervise daily operation of the engine room and all machinery systems.

Monitor and maintain:

Main engines and propulsion systems

Auxiliary engines/generators

Pumps, compressors, purifiers, etc.

Ensure fuel, lubrication, and cooling systems are working efficiently.

 2. Supervision and Team Leadership
Supervise engine room crew (including 3rd engineer, 4th engineer, motormen, oilers).

Assign maintenance and repair tasks.

Train junior engineers and conduct technical briefings.

Oversee watchkeeping when not on duty.

3. Planned Maintenance & Repairs
Implement the Planned Maintenance System (PMS).

Schedule and perform preventive maintenance on machinery and equipment.

Record defects, repairs, and overhauls in the maintenance logs.

4. Safety, Environmental, and Emergency Duties
Ensure compliance with MARPOL, SOLAS, and ISM Code.

Operate and maintain fire detection, firefighting, and emergency systems.

Handle emergency repairs and assist in emergency response (fire, blackout, flooding, etc.).

Participate in drills and safety training sessions.

5. Documentation and Reporting
Keep detailed records of:

Fuel and oil consumption

Machinery performance

Maintenance activities

Report defects or unusual occurrences to the Chief Engineer.

Ensure the engine room logbook is complete and accurate.

6. Utilities and Hotel Support Systems
On cruise ships, the 2nd Engineer also oversees systems critical to passenger comfort:

HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning)

Desalination plants (freshwater production)

Sewage and waste treatment systems

Hot water and steam systems

Qualifications Required:
Second Engineer License (STCW III/2)

Relevant STCW safety courses

Experience as 3rd Engineer or equivalent

Strong understanding of marine engineering systems, safety, and environmental regulations

Work Experience Requirements
