Chief Officer (Cruise Line)

Role Overview
The Chief Officer is the second-in-command on board a cruise vessel and holds overall responsibility for the vessel’s safe navigation, stability, and cargo/passenger operations. As the Master’s principal deputy, the Chief Officer manages the deck department, ensuring compliance with international maritime regulations, safety management systems, and company policies. The role requires strong leadership, operational expertise, and commitment to passenger and crew safety.

Key Responsibilities
Navigation & Vessel Operations
• Act as the Master’s deputy and assume command in their absence.
• Oversee safe navigation and voyage planning in accordance with COLREGS, SOLAS, and company policies.
• Maintain up-to-date nautical charts, publications, and navigational equipment.
• Ensure proper stability, ballasting, and draft management of the vessel.


Safety & Compliance
• Serve as the ship’s Safety Officer, responsible for implementing and monitoring the Safety Management System (SMS).
• Organize, lead, and record all safety drills and training, including lifeboat and emergency exercises.
• Ensure compliance with MARPOL, ISM, ISPS, and flag/state regulations.
• Conduct regular inspections of lifesaving appliances, firefighting equipment, and safety gear.


Crew Leadership & Development
• Manage and supervise deck officers and crew, ensuring safe and efficient execution of duties.
• Conduct training, appraisals, and mentoring for junior officers.
• Promote a safety-first culture and professional working environment.


Deck & Maintenance Oversight
• Supervise deck operations including mooring, anchoring, and tendering procedures.
• Coordinate deck maintenance schedules and inspections to ensure seaworthiness.
• Oversee the maintenance of passenger areas related to safety (lifeboats, gangways, etc.).


Passenger & Guest Relations
• Support the Captain in maintaining high standards of safety and security for passengers.
• Provide professional and courteous interaction with guests when required.


Qualifications & Experience
• Valid Chief Mate (Unlimited) Certificate of Competency (STCW II/2).
• Extensive experience as a senior deck officer, preferably in passenger/cruise vessels.
• Strong knowledge of SOLAS, ISM Code, MARPOL, ISPS, and STCW conventions.
• Proven leadership and team management skills.
• Excellent communication and decision-making abilities.
• Proficiency in English (written and spoken); additional languages are an asset.
