The responsibilities of the Oiler will include, but not be limited to the following:

  • Assist the Staff Chief Engineer/Chief Mechanic with safe and efficient maintenance and repair of plant & machinery.
  • Keep a close communication with the Chief Mechanic.
  • Be familiar with the Safety Management System (SMS)/Ship Operating Procedures (SOP) and have a full understanding of his/her responsibilities in the Safety Organization as per the Emergency Plan.
  • Report any defects or deficiencies immediately to Chief Mechanic.
  • Be familiar with safe operation of equipment and systems in machinery spaces.
  • Communicate with Chief Mechanic regarding machinery space operations.
  • Maintain all machinery spaces in a clean and safe condition.
  • Be familiar with and assist Chief Mechanic with bunker station operations.
  • Additional duties as directed by Chief Mechanic.
  • It is the responsibility of every crewmember to perform duties according to the Supervisor’s instruction; the work should be carried out in a safe and professional manner, in order to keep the ship’s equipment at the highest level of safe operating condition.
  • Additional duties as directed by Staff Chief Engineer/Chief Engineer.
  • Perform support duties within other Engine Divisions when found required due to operational needs (predominantly within Environmental, Hotel Maintenance and HVAC-R Divisions).
  • Familiarization Forms.

QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Documented experience from related jobs.
  • STCW2010 courses.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Able to work 7 days a week for a minimum period for extended period of time.
  • While performing the essential functions of this job, all team members are required to stand; walk long distances on the ship; use hands to touch, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk, hear, taste and smell.  All vessel positions require repetitive motion of bending, climbing, going up and down stairs and lifting up to 23 kilograms.  This job requires specific vision abilities to include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • All team members must be physically able to participate in emergency lifesaving procedures and drills. All vessel positions require full use and range of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities to receive and give instructions in the event of an emergency including the lowering of lifeboats.
  • Assist with zodiac landings, Marina days and Expeditions when required.
  • Work within different temperature changes—indoors to outdoors.
  • Able to pass basic safety course.
