Steersman - River Ships

The Steersman is responsible for navigating the ship correctly. He assists the Captain in taking care of the ship and all persons on board and of the safety and performance of regulations stipulated by law. He also assists the Captain in taking care of overseeing order, tidiness and hygiene on board. The Steersman directly reports to the Captain.

TASKS

• Navigation and manoeuvring
• Looking for obstructions in path of the vessel
• Measuring water depth
• Turning wheels on bridges
• Sweeping, mopping and washing decks to remove oil and dirt
• Handling lines to moor vessels to wharfs, to tie up vessels to other vessels, or to rig towing lines

REQUIREMENTS

• At least three or four years of river ship experience in a comparable position
• Rhine Patent
• Danube patent
• Seamen’s book
• Excellent communication skills and problem solving skills
• Good  German and English speaking skills
• In good health
• Flexible and Hard worker
• Stress tolerance
