This division is responsible for making passengers comfortable while they are in their rooms, and includes the care of the cabins, room and messenger service, and laundry pick up and delivery. Jobs in the hosekeeping department of a cruise line are very similar to the jobs you will find in a five-star hotel or resort

Cruise ship stewards are part of the housekeeping team on board a cruise ship. As a cabin steward, you would be responsible for cleaning and servicing the rooms (or cabins) of the guests.

In this role you will need to be polite and friendly. You will use your customer service skills to make sure that the guests have an enjoyable stay. If you like working with people and you want to work in tourism, this could be the job for you.

There aren't any specific entry requirements to get into this job, but you will usually need to have some experience of working in a hotel, restaurant or bar.

Work activities

As a cabin steward you will be responsible for cleaning and maintaining a section of guest rooms or cabins. Your work would include:

  • showing guests to their cabins before the cruise sets off
  • taking orders for food and drink to be served to the cabin
  • keeping guests’ cabins clean and tidy
  • making beds
  • supplying fresh linen
  • vacuuming floors
  • replacing mini bar items and providing a bill
  • replacing stocks of supplies such as shampoo and soap.

You would work as part of a team, under the supervision of an assistant or head housekeeper.
