Employed by Crew People International Ltd working onboard Thomson Cruises as the Chief Engineer you will be fully responsible to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the ship’s mechanical and electrical equipment onboard, including managing repairs, inspections and maintenance programmes of the complete technical equipment, along with all steelwork of the ship and all tanks with control and measuring equipment under the oversight of the Technical Superintendent of Thomson Cruises externally appointed technical managaers.
As the Chief Engineer you will be in charge of the engineering department and will be responsible for working of all equipment onboard be it electrical, mechanical, pneumatic or hydraulic. You will supervise the work of the engine room and will be assisted by a team of engineers.
What you will be doing
As the Chief Engineer you will be responsible for all items under your supervision being in good working order and responsible for taking the appropriate action accordingly.
You will lead meetings with the Senior Engineers and Chief Electrician regarding general services every morning, to discuss and identify solutions for occurring problems, plan future projects ahead of time and to find ways to deal with expected future problems.
You will coordinate the major jobs to be completed in the engine room and ship, communicate and advise when necessary and check the engine room and control room on a regular bases.
As the Chief Engineer you are a key member of the ship’s management team (consisting of the Captain, Hotel Manager, Staff Captain and the Chief Engineer) and thus have meetings at least two times a week to discuss all items concerning the ships management and will take action if necessary.
You are responsible for all technical items concerning health and sanitation and will chair a meeting about these items at least once a week to ensure action is taken when necessary.
You are responsible to ensure there are sufficient amounts of fuel , lubricating oils, fresh water and chemicals onboard ship, that these items are ordered in time to ensure a safe operation of the ship. Along with these items you are also responsible for sufficient amounts of spare parts being onboard ship, that the spare parts are ordered in time and to communicate with the main office to defend the requisition when necessary.
You will assist with compiling the dry dock specification and will work closely with the Technical Superintendent to ensure that the dry dock is well planned around the ship’s needs and the budget requirements and is well executed on schedule.
You are responsible for all items concerning the continuous survey of the technical installation and that these are being surveyed in time, you will survey most items yourself and will order a surveyor to confirm these items and to survey all remaining items.
You are responsible that all logbooks concerning the engine room installation and that they are filled out according to rules and regulations prescribed by flag state.
You will be in command of the Engine Control Room and in an emergency you will coordinate with Command and Control on the bridge.
What we are looking for
- You must be educated to an appropriate in order to have gained an STCW III/2 qualification
- You must have a valid STCW III/2 Certificate of Competency – Marine Chief Engineer
- You must have experience in both mechanical and electrical engineering
- You must be organised to efficiently maintain the engine room and must also be able to work under pressure and within time constraints in the event of an emergency
- People management skills are essential for the role

Work Experience Requirements
All applicants must have previous experience in working on a Cruise Ship, in a 4/5* Hotel or in an Upscale Restaurant.
Language Requirements
Good knowledge of the English language is required.
