Contract length.

Usually from 5 to 8 month.  The contract and vacation lengths are usually determined in the company policy. It is seldom possible to prolong or shorten the contract duration.

Payment.

The employees are paid twice a month in U.S. dollars cash.  Salary depends on the position on board. Income of the tipping personnel (such positions as bar waitress, dining room assistant waiter, cabin stewardess, etc.) vary from $800 to $2500 and sometimes even higher. Their official salary is often only $50 per month, whereas the income is generated through the tips.

Insurance.

Health insurance is provided for in the contract.

Living conditions

Your accommodation will depend on the status given to your particular job and the ship on which you are working.  Cabins allocated to crew are often shared by two to four people (usually of the same department), subject to space availability.
