Experience as Second Engineer on cruise ships is esential. High voltage propulsion background candidates will be first considerate.To join the vessel within 3 weeks.

Authority and Interrelation

Independent engine room watchkeeping officer

Reports to the Staff engineer on routine operational and administrative matters unless otherwise instructed by the chief engineer.

Authorised to supervise staff under his charge and take all immediate measures within the scope of the position to maintain a safe and efficient engine room watch.

Responsibility (including but not limited to)

  • Understand and abide by all relevant documentation, regulations, guidelines and procedures. Sign copies as instructed by the superior officer to indicate understanding of the same.
  • Report any undesired events, unsafe practices or near accidents observed to the superior officer/s and attempt to rectify them if safely possible.
  • Strive to improve knowledge in all spheres of engine room activity and respond positively to training imparted. Assist in the training of staff if called upon to do so.
  • Perform all duties assigned by the chief engineer and Staff engineer. Main ones being but not limited to those listed below:
  • Keep watches in the engine room as directed by the chief and second engineer.
  • Perform maintenance duties on machinery both in the machinery space and elsewhere as directed.
  • Perform duties related to bunkering of fuels and lubes.
  • Performs checks and calculations of fuel, lubes and water as ordered.
  • Perform security related duties as required by the Ship Security Officer.
  • Assist in the upkeep and inventory of stores and spares.
  • Maintain records of maintenance and testing of machinery as directed.
  • Participate in the upkeep and maintenance of safety equipment.
  • Participate in pre-arrival and departure test of machinery and equipment and at manoeuvring stations.
  • Ensure familiarisation with emergency procedures and contingency training and participate in all associated drills.
  • Ensure that watch keepers or personnel under his responsibility understand and carry out their duties, and are provided with guidance as necessary.
  • Participate in waste management activity if ordered.
  • Assist the chief and staff engineer in other tasks and record keeping and other clerical duties as required.
  • Will be a member of the Safety Committee or any other official shipboard body set up under the authority of the Master, if called upon to do so.
  • Any other duties as delegated by the chief engineer or staff engineer within the scope of the rank and cool mindset.
