We’re on a mission to create the world’s most irresistible travel brand and we are seeking a Chief Engineer to help us Make Ship Happen!

The successful Sailor will join our Newbuild team in Tulcea, Romania initially and then Genoa Sestri in Italy and be a key part of delivering our first Cruise ship to bring true sea change to the industry.

The Chief Engineer is the Head of the Technical Department and responsible for the running of the Engine Room team and all its Technical Services onboard. He is directly responsible to the Master and advises on all Technical Matters affecting the vessels operation. He will work as part of our Newbuild team in the design and commissioning of the Technical Machinery and Equipment. He will also assist us with developing our on board and office policies and procedures, Safety Management System and in the specification of the Technical Department First Fit.

The Chief Engineer is responsible for the implementation of safety and anti-pollution policies prepared by the Company and Port Authorities and he must always ensure his team uphold the safe operation of all machinery, safe-working practices.

The Chief Engineer must ensure that all areas of ISM that apply to his department are conscientiously maintained.

The Chief Engineer is a leader of his team and must act as a mentor to all his Officers and Crew in line with Virgin Voyages principles.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in commissioning of all technical machinery and equipment, including main, auxiliary and domestic machinery during the build phase following the Company, Classification Society and relevant Flag State requirements.
  • Implement and maintain vessels PMS (planned maintenance system), plant history and inventory systems.
  • Liaison with other heads of departments and shoreside management for the co-ordination of technical department activities affecting their areas of responsibility.
  • Monitor all activities within his department, ensuring that all responsibilities are correctly discharged and all individuals under his remit comply with procedures and instructions concerning safety and environmental protection.
  • Responsible to ensure that all policies laid down by Virgin Voyages are executed and personally verifying that all Technical personnel are properly instructed and aware of their duties and responsibilities relating to the SMS (Safety Management System).
  • Act as an Ambassador of the Virgin Culture
  • Mentor, Coach and Performance manage his entire team in line with company guidelines and carry out necessary disciplinary action should it be required.
  • Prepare appraisals for ‘Direct reports’ in accordance with Virgin Voyages policies.
  • Review and comment on appraisals for all other members of his team in accordance with Virgin Voyages policies.
  • Partake in inspections and commissioning tests as required

 

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Chief Engineer Unlimited COC
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as Snr. Engineering Officer onboard a Passenger Ship.
  • Newbuild Cruise Ship experience desirable
  • Knowledge of Safety, Health and Environmental Protection Management System and MLC requirements.
  • All certificates as required by the STCW code for this position.
  • Good command of the English Language.
  • Knowledgeable in ISM matters.
