Summary:
The Captain is overall responsible for leading and managing all aspects of ship’s operations and activities.
Captain’s Responsibilities and Authority:
- Takes rank and precedence over all Officers onboard.
- Is responsible for the effective implementation of the Company’s vision, goals, policies, Safety and Environmental Management System.
- Responsible for the safe operation of the ship and successful execution of the ship’s itinerary,:
- The vessel is maintained in a seaworthy condition at all times.
- The safe conduct of all navigation.
- Promote cooperation between all departments onboard and provides appropriate leadership to ensure smooth, safe and efficient operations of the ship.
- The safe manning of the vessel.
- The compliance with laws and regulations that effect the operations of the ship.
- Organizing and participation in emergency drills.
- Is directly responsible for the safety and welfare of all Crew and Guests.
- Is to keeps the Company fully informed of all matters affecting the vessel’s operations, including Statutory Certificates, and report any matters concerning safety, occupational safety and health, and environmental protection that requires the assistance of the Company for correction to the Designated Person Ashore (DPA).
- Perform and manage other duties as assigned.
Overall supervision of onboard operations:
- Is to instill and continually advocate for a culture of safe, compliant and efficient operations onboard their ship, including continually working to make the primary focuses onboard Guest and Crew Safety, Guest Experience, Officer and Crew Welfare.
- Provide engaged and hands on involvement in ensuring that all ship’s systems are operating to their full operational capabilities, or appropriate actions are being taken to return them to a full operational status at the earliest opportunity.
- Actively engaged in monitoring and positively influencing the performance of all Officers and Crewmembers, taking actions to improve their skill levels and performance, and fully and appropriately documenting their performance. This includes monitoring and assessing overtime reported by Officers and Crew in the Deck and Engine departments.
- Monitoring and reviewing trends in onboard revenue streams, always looking for ideas to improve the ship’s performance, including discussing at least monthly with department heads.
- Actively engaged with Company to ensure ship is properly manned, and ensuring that onboard staff members are properly employed per their designation position and job description
- Maintain budget awareness in all areas; know when an area is over budget.
Guest experience:
- The Captain of our ships is an important part of our Guest experience. When interacting with our Guests, they are to ensure our guests understand that we will safely take them to unique and interesting destinations.
- Windstar Cruises requires Captains to be professional and engaging when interacting with Guests. Additionally, they are to be visible and approachable to our guests.
Requirements:
Mandatory: The following are required:
- Valid CoC master unlimited
- Valid Seafarers Medical
- Must pass a security background check
- Valid SSO COC
Optional/Preferred (Wind Class ships):
- A passion for and/or experience in sailing recreationally or professionally.

Travel to the yachts and extended stay up to 3 months on board is required. Regularly required to sit and stand. Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job includes close vision. Some stress may occur, especially during traveling periods and during periods of daily activities. Contracts are 3 months on 3 months off.
Work Experience Requirements
All applicants must have previous experience in working on a Cruise Ship.
Language Requirements
Good knowledge of the English language is required.
