Required: Chief Engineer Unlimited, New Build Experience, High Voltage Certification

The Chief Engineer is the Head of the Technical Department. They are directly responsible to the Master with functional responsibility to the Managing Director of the Company and they advise the Captain on all engineering matters.

Their primary responsibility must always be the safe operation of all machinery, safe-working practices within their department and the safety of the ship. They must ensure that those areas of ISM that apply to their department are conscientiously maintained.

Aside from technical competence, areas of expectations should be focused around:

  1. Performance - the Chief Engineer should commit and display the highest levels of both technical and managerial performance in their role
  2. Passion - the Chief Engineer should demonstrate passion in the duties they carry out
  3. Pride - the Chief Engineer should take pride in all aspects of their work
  4. Leadership - the Chief Engineer should show strong leadership in all areas of responsibility and ensure continual professional development of themselves and all team members
  5. Consistency - the Chief Engineer should approach all tasks with a professional consistency
  6. Accurate Reporting - the Chief Engineer should ensure reports to the Master and on-board colleagues are accurate and truthful, highlighting areas of concern regardless of fault
  7. Communication - the Chief Engineer should be an effective communicator between all those on-board as well as shore-side

They are responsible for:

  • Maintaining and effectively operating, to the highest possible standards, all technical machinery and equipment including main, auxiliary and domestic machinery. These standards must never fall below that of the Company, the Classification Society and the relevant Flag State.
  • Implementing and maintaining the vessel's planned maintenance system, plant history and inventory systems.
  • Ensuring that the maintenance requirements of the Hotel Department are expeditiously dealt with, particularly those pertaining to hygiene and customer services.
  • Monitoring the condition of fixed firefighting systems and mobile firefighting appliances within technical spaces, ensuring they are in constant readiness.
  • Monitoring the activities of their department, ensuring that all the responsibilities detailed below are correctly discharged and that all technical department personnel comply with procedures and instructions concerning safety and environmental protection.
  • Ensuring close co-operation with the officer responsible for the ship's stability.
  • Monitoring the individual training of technical personnel in their operational duties.
  • Giving the Master a positive report prior to each departure, that the vessel is ready for sea with regard to the responsibilities of their department. Central to this report, they shall identify that the ship's main and auxiliary machinery is in a suitable condition to proceed to sea.
  • Keeping the Master promptly and fully informed of any occurrence in a technical space that might affect the navigation or the essential services in the ship.
  • Monitoring the fuel economy of the vessel, consulting frequently with the Captain with regard to passage planning and the setting and regulation of economical speeds.
  • Monitoring the actual and forecast expenditure of their department with regard to the budgets established for the vessel and advising the Master and Fleet Superintendent accordingly.
  • Submitting through the Captain such reports and returns as are required by the Company.
  • Liaison with other departments for the co-ordination of technical department activities and ensuring the smooth running of their department.
  • The safety, discipline and welfare (including the cleanliness of their quarters) of all members of the technical department. He is directly in charge them but may delegate this authority to their Staff Engineer as appropriate.
  • Personally ensuring that all Officers in their Department are aware of their social obligations whilst in passenger's public areas.
  • Ensuring that the policies laid down by the Company are executed and personally verifying that all Officers within their department are properly instructed and aware of their duties and responsibilities relating to the Safety Management System.
  • The effective operation and maintenance of all watertight doors;
  • The effective operation and maintenance of all arrangements and equipment provided for pollution prevention, and the supervision of pollution prevention measures during bunkering and bunker transfer.
  • The disposal of sludge, bilge water, oily water and exhausted oils in accordance with international, national and Company requirements and instructions.
  • Co-ordination and collaboration with the Safety Officer for the effective operation and maintenance of all safety equipment. To this purpose the Chief Engineer will nominate one Engineer Officer as Deputy Safety Officer, responsible for the safety maintenance in the machinery spaces. Appraisal report on its performance will be made in completion of their safety duties.
  • Issuing "Chief Engineer's Standing Orders" for the safe and efficient technical operation of the ship. A copy of these standing orders will always be available in the Engine Room or Engine Control Room.
  • Providing a "Chief Engineer's Order Book", to be kept in the Engine Room or Engine control room, which will be read and the order signed by each Engineer taking over the watch.
  • Ensuring that all Technical Department Personnel are familiar with their own emergency duties and that adequate training is given and drills completed for firefighting, power failure, damage, etc.
  • The workload of the technical personnel is to be organised such that all personnel attend training and drills on a regular basis.
  • Ensuring that sufficient members of the Engine Department remain on board in harbour to comply with the ship's In Port Manning Plan
  • When proceeding ashore, their deputy must remain on-board and the Captain must be informed.

The assignment of each Technical Department Responsibility detailed elsewhere.

Each Technical Department Responsibility should be assigned to an Officer rank that will possess the appropriate qualifications and experience. Technical Department Responsibilities are to be assigned to the Staff Engineer or the Chief Engineer himself where appropriate. These are to be submitted to the Company for agreement after consultation with the Captain.

Additional Duties

  • Attend passenger social events as directed by the Master.
  • Partake in inspections, trainings and meetings as directed by the Master, Managers and Owners.
  • Ensure direct reports are line managed effectively in accordance with Saga and V.Ships appraisal policies
  • Ensure accessibility to direct reports and support individual's needs, sourcing advice and reporting matters of a personal nature confidentially to the Master and Managers where necessary.
  • Other shipboard tasks pertaining to departmental operations as directed by Master and Managers.
  • Attending trainings and office visits arranged by V.Ships where possible
