Faststream Recruitment has entered into an exclusive partnership with MSC Cruises to recruit and hire the new build site teams across Europe who will be critical in MSC's extensive cruise ship new build programme.

Job Purpose

The Specialist, Machinery is required to monitor the construction of all installation works and commissioning of equipment related to Main Engines & Auxiliary System and equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitors the construction of all installation works and commissioning of equipment related to Main Engines & Auxiliary System and equipment including, with specific knowledge of:
    • Power production plant;
    • Propulsion plant, including auxiliary equipment, automation and safety systems;
    • Development and verification of relevant communication and interfaces protocols, machinery equipment, data networks;
    • Sox Scrubber system, SCR, steam production plant, cooling systems, machinery ventilation, pumps and fans including inverter and electric motor technology and their application to the ships' systems and machinery;
    • Fuel system, lube oil system, freshwater production plant, piping system, valves and fittings, compressed air production plant;
    • Engine Room and technical spaces ventilation;
    • SRtP rules;
    • Any other system or equipment as mentioned in the ships specification, ensuring that all aspects of these systems are inspected, verified and functionally tested to meet the design parameters and contractual requirements;
  • Ensures that the work in the shipyards follows the approved drawings, the specifications and complies with acceptable standards;
  • Checks that all the equipment and systems comply with the requirements of the specification, are safe to operate;
  • Ensures that equipment and systems are provided with reasonable access for maintenance and repair together with manufacturers recommended planned maintenance and installation procedures;
  • Works closely with the technical office, performing joint visits with its representative, updating them regularly and discussing with them any issues to identify together suitable solutions;
  • May attend project meetings and prepares progress reports on a weekly basis;
  • Ensures deficiencies identified during inspections are recorded and closed out;
  • For any inspection and or part of inspection that falls outside of his/her expertise and or experience, seek the assistance from the other inspectors to provide them with all the necessary information and or support so that they are able to achieve the standard that is required per the architectural design intent and/or specification.

Job-Requirements: skills, competencies, experience

  • Fluency in English, knowledge of French is a plus;
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or Class 1 Certificate of Competency as Marine Chief Engineer;
  • Significant experience in ship building, classification societies, ship operators, technical suppliers or engineering firms as a technical expert within Marine Engineering, relating specifically to cruise ships;
  • Proficiency with the use of Microsoft Office (including Excel, MS Word, MS Project or equivalent and PowerPoint) and ability to use design programs such as Autocad;
  • Detailed and thorough knowledge of Marine Electrical Engineering and its application to cruise ships construction;
  • Excellent analytical skills and experience with reviewing specifications, drawings, layouts and other technical documentation;
  • Understanding of shipbuilding and programming knowledge combined with basic knowledge of SOLAS, IMO, classification rules and marine standards;
  • Availability to work long hours under pressure and over the weekend when required. Frequent travelling is involved;
  • Excellent team working and communication in a multicultural environment.
