Position Summary
- Responsible to command the overall operation, guests, crew and safety of the ship. Ensuring that maritime protocols, environmental policies and safety regulations are strictly followed. Execution of duties in compliance with Company Policies, any National or International standards and with Public Health or any other prescribed regulations, safeguarding the Owner’s and Company interests at all times.
Reporting Structure
- Directly reporting to SVP Marine.
- Direct subordinates – Chief Engineer, Staff Captain, Hotel Director, Finance Officer, HR Manager.
Safety Duties:
- Instigates and participates in crew and passenger safety drills.
- Must always comply with the Company’s safety and pollution prevention regulations and operating procedures.
- Leads by example by taking care of Health and Safety of self and others.
- Ensures that all work equipment, personal protective equipment, chemicals and safety devices are being used correctly.
Education/Experience/Qualifications:
- Valid CoC Master unlimited A-II/2.
- Valid STCW certification.
- Certification as required by regulations for the position.
- Experience as Captain on varied class of ships and itineraries.
- Physically and medically fit with certification.
- Moral integrity is required.
- Public Health, Sanitation and Environmental certification.
Language requirements:
Fluent English (verbal, written and technical). English is the working and safety language on board. This also includes the ability to give and receive instructions in verbal and written forms and to effectively and efficiently engage with guests and crew members. Additional languages are considered beneficial.
Computer knowledge:
Good working knowledge of AMOS, and Microsoft Office applications.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Required to stand, walk long distances, reaching and sitting. Repetitive motion of bending, going up and down stairs, climbing ladders. Lifting or pushing of up to 50lbs. The position requires overtime work and irregular schedules. Works in all areas of the vessel with noise, light traffic, distracting environments as well as an office environment.

Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for the safe operation of the vessel and ensures that it is operated and manned according to both Company and legal guidelines (to include but not limited to the following):
- Navigation.
- Safety of souls onboard.
- Medical care of souls onboard and Infection Prevention
- Environmental protection.
- Compliance with local authorities.
- Compliance with international maritime law and flat state policies.
- Accountable to make decisions in order to preserve all life onboard, crisis management and course of action during an emergency.
- The Master shall use his judgement and not hesitate to alter course and speed if required by exceptional circumstances.
- Safeguards all safety equipment, certifying that it is maintained and ready for use.
- Oversees in collaboration with the Staff Captain that the vessel is in compliance with the ships security plan as required by ISPS.
- Shall be able to undertake at management level, the tasks, duties and responsibilities listed in sections A-II/1, A-II/2 of the STCW 1995.
- Issues ‘Captains Standing Orders’ for the safe and efficient operation of the ship.
- Provides a ‘Captains Night Order Book’ which will be read and the orders signed by each Deck Officer on taking over the watch.
- Ensures seaworthiness of the vessel.
- Responsible for being familiar with the operation and location of all life-saving, fire-fighting and pollution prevention equipment.
- Oversees in collaboration with the Chief Engineer and Staff Captain the maintenance and operation of machinery, engines and safety equipment with regular inspections.
- Oversees in conjunction with the Doctor that adequate medical supplies are onboard for guests and crew requiring medical attention. Seeks medical assistance ashore including evacuation where necessary.
- Ensures that all ships charts, documents, certifications and class are up to date and compliant.
- Keeps accurate records of daily activities, personnel records, ship positions and movements, ports of call, weather and sea conditions, pollution control efforts and guest and crew status.
- Oversees that risk assessment procedures are adhered to.
- Enforces the Company’s drug and alcohol policy.
- Enforces disciplinary procedures set forth by the Company.
- Responsible to confirm that all vessel publications, papers, documents including certification for the intended voyage are up to date and valid.
- Calculates fuel consumption in conjunction with the Chief Engineer based on sea conditions, wind speed, port availability and ship speed.
- Oversees that sufficient amount of bunkers, provisions and stores are safely stowed.
- Overall responsible to ascertain that all nautical and technical equipment is tested and operational as per Company requirements and conformity to regulations.
- Commands the support of management when exercising the maximum care and judgement which he believes is in the best interest of the safe navigation and operation of the ship.
- Conducts Senior Management Meetings once per cruise as per Company requirements ensuring accurate minutes of this meeting are sent to relevant parties.
- Chairs the SEPPH Committee and ensures that the Committee recommendations on HSE issues are followed through to completion.
- Ensures that the Staff Captain is fully aware and competent to take on the responsibilities of the Captain so that should the need arise he can take command of the vessel.
- Present on the Bridge during all maneuvers, unless the Command was delegated to another responsible Officer (e.g. Staff Captain)
- Trains and motivates lower ranking officers to develop their interest and responsibilities in their duties.
- Guides and directs subordinates, including setting performance standards and monitoring performance. Identifying the developmental needs of others to improve their knowledge and skills. Delivering effective performance reviews.
- Delegates independent leadership of responsibilities allowing subordinates to develop and use their own judgement.
- Oversees the function of the hotel operation and personnel through the management of department heads.
- Oversees that the maintenance programs for the vessel are implemented and followed in a timely manner according to Company policies.
- Ensures that inspections, maintenance and testing of shipbaord systems are always carried out according to Company policies, National, International or any other prescribed regulations.
- Oversees all activities taking place on the Bridge during docking, maneuvers, departure and open sea, unless delegated to another responsible Officer (e.g. Staff Captain).
- Oversees that all ship's stability calculations and verifications are made for the intended voyage and trains the subordinate deck officers in performing these functions.
- Responsible for the fresh water supplies and consumption (in conjunction with the Chief Engineer and Staff Captain).
- Responsible for the vessel budget, ensuring that it remains below the budget set by the Company.
- Ensures that the ships company is properly trained on emergency procedures, use of equipment and accident prevention.
- Keeps all lifesaving equipment in a good state of repair to ensure a complete state of readiness to meet any emergency requirements.
- Schedules and conducts weekly fire and lifeboat drills for personnel as per SOLAS and company requirements.
- Deals with any conflicts that arise onboard where necessary. Counselling, coaching and teaching to find a solution that satisfies everyone involved.
- Ensures co-operation with the HR Manager regarding crew matters.
- Provides information and consultancy during inspections.
- Has a full knowledge of every aspect of safety, stability and damage control features of the vessel. Being fully conversant with the Company’s VMS.
- Participates and oversees in the development of on board operational plans to support the successful completion of maintenance periods and works closely with the Chief Engineer, Staff Captain and Hotel Department on all maintenance issues, ensuring a minimal impact on the shipboard operation.
- Keeps the Company promptly and fully informed of all problems and matters of significance, suggesting improvements of policies, procedures and instructions regarding safety and pollution prevention.
- Reports to the ‘Designated Person Ashore’ any matter that, in his opinion, could affect the safe operation of the ship or could present a risk of pollution and which requires the assistance of the Company for the corrective action.
- Executes strict practices to ensure that the vessel is operated in accordance with the following regulations and Company policies, during all prevailing circumstances and conditions:

- Ballast Water Management.
- US CDC Vessel Sanitation Program.
- Stability and Trim.
- Merchant Shipping Legislation of the Bahamas.
- Ensures a smooth and efficient operation of the ship and the coordination of activities between each of the ships departments.
- Acts as the Company’s representative onboard for matters pertaining to Authorities, Agents, Charterers.
- Accurate completion of log books and other assigned documentation.
- Establishes a climate of openness and trust within the officers, works as part of the team to achieve results.
- Accountable for ensuring that Company, National and International standards are maintained and meeting Public Health requirements.
- Organizes and performs periodically a Master’s Review of the (Safety, Environmental, Energy, Quality, Infection prevention) Management System for efficiency.
