We are looking for 1st Engineer - LNG, ready to join cruise vessel SILVER RAY, embarkation ASAP, contract 3 months +/-1, required experienced as such, managment CoC - STCW Reg.III/2, all valid Certificates, including ADVANCED IGF code Certificate.
Position Summary
- Maintaining hazardous area registers/checklists up to date
- Ensuring proper instructions are given to crew accessing GHA
- Providing or removing authorization for designated crew to operate in GHA
- Designated Person in Charge of LNG bunkering operation, co-responsible for safe operation and accurate documentation before, during and after bunkering
- PIC for liaising with Supplier PIC before, during and after LNG bunkering
- Co-responsible for ensuring safe and standard operation of the LNG plant
- Carrying out or directly supervising manual work on the LNG plant
- Supervising Boil Off Gas Management
- Daily maintaining and checking the Gas Plant System
- Nitrogen plant system, compressor and generator
- Daily maintaining and checking the Gas Detection System (Hazardous Area)
- Glycol water modules
- Cold recovery system
- LNG Room ventilation in conjunction with A/C reefer
- GVU (DD/GG + Oil fired boiler)
- Test of the Safety Gas System plant
- AMOS updating
- Maintaining LNG Emergency Response Plan and carrying out crew drills on various hazardous scenarios
- Maintaining the Bunker web
- Co-responsible for the MGO Bunker Operation
- Maintaining effective and correct communication within the Engine department and others
- Ensuring proper coordination with different technical parties and other department
Reporting Structure
- Reporting to the Staff Engineer.
Safety Duties:
- Participates in crew safety drills according to instructions.
- Must always comply with the Company’s safety and pollution prevention regulations and operating procedures.
- Leads by example by taking care of Health and Safety of self and others.
- Ensures that all work equipment, personal protective equipment, chemicals and safety devices are being used correctly. Delivering training, guidance and supervision on how to use and maintain them where necessary.
Education/Experience/Qualifications:
- Valid STCW certification
- Valid CoC A-III/2
- Appropriate certification as required by regulations
- Advanced IGF training and previous experience on an IGF or IGC vessel in a senior position
- Extensive experience in subordinate positions and on-board passenger ships in a similar role and preferable experience with Wartsila engines
- Physically and medically fit
- Moral integrity is required
- Public Health, Sanitation and Environmental training courses are appreciated
- Proficient in reading and understanding technical drawings and manuals
- Alaska experience is appreciated
- It is recommended to have Public Health, Coast Guard and Port State Control experience
Language requirements:
Excellent fluent English (verbal, written and technical). English is the working and safety language on board. This also includes the ability to give and receive instructions in verbal and written forms and to effectively and efficiently engage with guests and crew members. Additional languages are considered beneficial.
Computer knowledge:
Good working knowledge of AMOS and Microsoft applications.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Required to stand, walk long distances, reaching and sitting. Repetitive motion of bending, going up and down stairs, climbing ladders. Lifting or pushing of up to 50lbs. The position requires overtime work and irregular schedules. Works in the Engine Control Room, Engine spaces with noise, light traffic, distracting environments.

Key Responsibilities
- The 1st Engineer LNG in conjunction with the Chief Electrician shall maintain a Hazardous Area Equipment register/list up to date
- The 1st Engineer LNG and supported by Safety Officer shall
- Ensure that all personnel that have access to Gas Hazardous Area (GHA) have received proper training and instruction
- Provide and remove authorisation to enter in the GHA (depending on operation or maintenance)
- Ensure that the authorisations are recorded in the Permit to Work in GHA form LNG 06
- Check that the procedural requirements are applied by performing initial and random checks
- The 1st Engineer LNG supported by Safety officer does the Induction procedure:
- Conduct the initial induction for Entry to GHA – shall be provided to all personnel who require entry into GHA
- Cover the following requirements in the induction:
- PPE requirements
- Portable gas detection requirements – demonstrate use
- Ex proof equipment policy
- Evacuation requirements
- Entry authorisation process
- Entry procedure, use of Air Lock
- LNG Hazards Risk Assessment
- Communication
- Document the induction by use of VMS form SAF111 “Training Session/Drill Attendance Log”
- Authorise on Permits to Work (related to LNG- forms governing LNG 05 Permit to Work on LNG Systems and specific LNG 06 Permit to Work in GHA) the above personnel who have had the induction
- The 1st Engineer LNG supported by Safety Officer does the GHA access and entry authorisation procedure:
- On a daily basis, assess the entering status of all the GHA, after review of the existing LNG Hazards Risk Assessment
- Give authorisation only after induction and after confirmation of correct execution of entry requirements – escort the authorised persons during the first entry
Note: Consider assigning permanent authorisation to duly trained persons - Consider withdrawing the authorisation to access a GHA temporarily, depending on the circumstances (for operational or maintenance purposes)
- The 1st engineer LNG is the Designated Person in Charge (PIC) of LNG bunkering
- Review the relevant Risk Assessment document prior to and during bunkering
- Prepare the ship for bunkering including safety tests
- Sign the relevant check lists
- Conduct a Toolbox Talk and hold pre-bunker meeting with all involved crew
- Calculate the max loading level of the tank
- Prepare the LNG Bunkering Plan in consultation with the Staff Captain for stability aspects
- If/As needed designate a Person in Charge (PIC) Assistant of the LNG bunker operation
- The PIC assistant must meet the IMO requirements of STCW 7/Circ. 23 or Enclosure 3 for advanced training
- Manage the bunker process and involved crew
- Review the bunker documentation from supplier’s representative for completeness and make sure all required signatures are received
- Monitor tank, temperature and pressure levels
- Respond in accordance with the Emergency Response Plan (ERP)
- Oversee the safety of the operation related to the LNG bunkering ensuring all company procedures are applied
- The Person in Charge (PIC)/ 1st Engineer LNG shall, at least 24hrs prior to the start of the LNG bunkering operation, do the following procedures:
- Complete and sign the LNG Bunkering Plan (see Form LNG 01 Bunkering Plan) and LNG Pre-Arrival Checklist (See Form LNG 02 Pre-Bunkering Checklist)
- Complete Part B of the IAPH LNG Bunker Checklist and check that the Supplier PIC has done the same
- Check that SIMOPS have been risk assessed and/or agreed with the local authorities and Supplier
- Request copies of and review the following documentation from the LNG Supplier PIC:
- Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)
- LNG composition load port data and/or onboard LNG composition
- Hose Pressure Test certificate
- Quick Connect Disconnect certificate
- Measurement System Calibration certificate
- The Person in Charge (PIC)/ 1st Engineer LNG shall on the day of bunkering, do the following:
- If practical, designate a suitably trained PIC assistant
- Confirm SIMOPS have been reviewed, and recommended control measures are in place as per the Operational Risk Assessment and in agreement with local authorities and Supplier
- Check the overfilling protection is active
- Hold a pre-bunkering meeting with the Supplier’s PIC to coordinate operations and JPBO (Joint Plan on Bunker Operations)
- Agree upon means of communication, with back up, and ensure all signals used are thoroughly understood by both parties
- Before commencing operations, if communications are lost stop immediately the operation
- Confirm the quantity and units of LNG to be used
- Define and agree on the frequency of rechecks
- Inspect the Supplier’s LNG transfer hose and connection
- For visible damage as far as practicable before use
- Verify that the hose is of sufficient length to allow for normal movement of the ship and the supplier facility (if applicable)
- Position them so it does not bend excessively
- Complete parts C and D of the IAPH LNG Bunker Checklist and check that the Supplier PIC has done the same
- Check calibration and date of all gas meters (including OS after inerting) (*Hazop action item)
- Complete parts 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the LNG Bunkering Checklist (see LNG 03 Bunkering Checklist), sign it and give it to the Chief Engineer to review and sign authorizing that the ship is ready to bunker
- Notify the Bridge when the LNG transfer operation is about to commence
- The Person in Charge (PIC)/ 1st Engineer LNG during bunkering, shall do the following:
- Be present and control the bunker transfer operation at a control operating station
- Maintain close cooperation and continuous communication with Supplier PIC throughout the entire bunkering operation
- Plan for preliminary ramp up of operation a flow of 25m3/hr in order to cool down (*Hazop action item)
- In order to prevent spurious closure of the valves in the vapor line – Define the operating conditions (pressures and temperatures) for the bunkering operation including the use of vapor line in Bunker station (*Hazop action item, having in mind design pressure of piping is 16 barg and of tank 9.5 barg)
- Calculate at the beginning of the operation the estimated time of completion (ETC) and check it regularly
Note: Any significant change to the ETC must be reported to Supplier - Start using forms LNG 04 Bunkering Time Log along with LNG 03 Bunkering checklist
- Advise the bunker vessel/ truck in advance of undertaking any of the following actions:
- Any changes to valve line up, LNG tank filling arrangements, etc., which have an impact on the bunkering operation
- The starting/stopping of any agreed SIMOPS that will take place during bunkering
- The Person in Charge (PIC)/ 1st Engineer LNG after completion of the bunkering operation, shall do the following:
- Complete parts 6.0 – 6.5 of the LNG Bunkering Checklist and the Bunkering Time Log (use Forms LNG 03 Bunkering Checklist and LNG 04 Bunkering Time Log), sign and give it to the Chief Engineer to review and sign, to authorise the ship to disconnect
- Check that the hoses, manifolds, and piping used during the transfer operation are free of LNG and purged and inerted so that natural gas levels are below the lower flammability level
- Check calibration dates for oxygen and methane meters to mitigate failure of measurement after draining (*Hazop action item)
- Cross check the bunkered quantity including the ships’ consumption during the bunkering
- Check that measurement system reports for before and after bunker operations and the certificate of measurement are corresponding with the Bunker Delivery Note (BDN)
- Complete parts 6.6 – 6.9 of the Bunkering Checklist (LNG 03) and ensure safe disconnection of transfer equipment, and hose and manifolds are securely blanked
- Verify crew used the required PPE when handling the hose (cryogenic) – see section “5. PPE equipment and Other equipment” (*Hazop action item)
- Complete part 7 of the Bunkering Checklist (LNG 03) and obtain the following documentation from the Suppliers representative (some of these may be delivered in electronic format):
- Bunker Delivery Note (BDN) including supporting LNG composition
- Supplier fuel measurement report
- Supplier time log/Statement of facts
- Review the LNG Bunkering Checklist and LNG Bunkering Time Log and give to the Chief Engineer to review and sign (use Forms LNG 03 Bunkering Checklist and LNG 04 Bunkering Time Log)
- LNG Standard Plant Operation – the 1st Engineer LNG:
- Assists for the supervision of the LNG plant operation and provide instructions to the ECR to perform regular operations
- Supervises Boil-Off gas management
- Any manual operation of the plant must be normally carried out in exceptional circumstances and should be performed by, or under the supervision of the 1st Engineer LNG
- Ensures that the system is maintained in a good and reliable state
- Ensures all onboard LNG training requirements have been met and applicable records are maintained
- Conducts daily checks of the operating parameters/ trends
- Gas Detection System – daily checks of the operating parameters/trends must be conducted by the 1st Engineer LNG
- LNG Emergency Response Plan – 1st Engineer LNG supported by Safety Officer:
- Maintain the shipboard LNG ERP and associated documents onboard
- Shall be familiar with the LNG ERP and respond for on-site assessment and action/report to the Chief Engineer
- Lead crew drills on the various hazardous scenarios
- Record them accurately
- All other duties as assigned
