1) The Chief Engineer is the Head of the Technical Department.

2) He is directly responsible to the Master with functional responsibility to the

assigned Fleet Technical Director and he advises the Captain on all engineering

matters.

3) His primary responsibility must always be the safe operation of all machinery,

safe-working practices within his department and the safety of the ship.

4) He must ensure areas of SMS applying to his department are conscientiously

maintained.

5) His is responsible for the following:

a) Maintaining and effectively operating, to the highest possible standards, all technical

machinery and equipment including main, auxiliary and domestic machinery.

Note: These standards must never fall below that of the Company, the Classification Society

and the relevant Flag State.

b) Implementing and maintaining the vessel’s planned maintenance system, plant history and

inventory systems.

c) Ensuring that the maintenance requirements of the Hotel Department are expeditiously

dealt with, particularly those pertaining to hygiene and customer services.

d) Monitoring the activities of his department, ensuring that all the responsibilities detailed

below are correctly discharged and that all technical department personnel comply with

SMS procedures and instructions concerning safety and environmental protection.

e) Ensuring close co-operation with the officer responsible for the ship’s stability.

f) Monitoring the individual training of technical personnel in their operational duties.

g) Giving the Master a positive report prior to each departure, that the vessel is ready for sea

with regard to the responsibilities of his department. Central to this report, he shall identify

that the ship’s main and auxiliary machinery is in a suitable condition to proceed to sea.

h) Keeping the Master promptly and fully informed of any occurrence in a technical space that

might affect the navigation or the essential services in the ship.

i) Monitoring the fuel economy of the vessel, consulting frequently with the Captain with

regard to passage planning and the setting and regulation of economical speeds.

j) Monitoring the actual and forecast expenditure of his department with regard to the

budgets established for the vessel and advising the Master and Fleet Technical Director

accordingly.

k) Submitting through the Captain such reports and returns as are required by the Company.

l) The effective operation and maintenance of all watertight doors;

m) The effective operation and maintenance of all arrangements and equipment provided for

pollution prevention, and the supervision of pollution prevention measures during

bunkering and oil transfer.

Work Experience Requirements

All applicants must have previous experience in working on a Cruise Ship.

Language Requirements

Good knowledge of the English language is required.
