Position Summary:
The Port Engineer of Worldwide Port Operations is responsible for providing technical, operational and financial expertise for new and existing port and land infrastructure elements required for the safe and successful interface between land and sea for all vessels globally. This position reports to the Director of Port Operations.
Career Snapshot:
- Provide engineering and safety input as directed for Department's landside initiatives
- Collaborate and communicate timely with relevant internal and external stakeholders related to: bollards, fenders, pontoons, gangways, shell gate platforms, piers, awnings, marquees, mooring buoys/dolphins, mooring configurations and analysis, shoreside tender to ship and shoreside tender to shore interfacing
- Provides technical design input and specification for shoreside facilities (all types), including obtaining and communicating cost estimates, schedules, and status to relevant stakeholders in a complete and timely manner
- Evaluate future port readiness as participant and contributor in port vetting process
- Serve as a liaison between Land Operations and other departments on technical matters related to new or existing engineering and landside initiatives, including port readiness/port vetting
- Represent Land Operations internally on technical aspects (non-Marine) for deployment of new or existing vessels to new or existing ports or regions.
Prepare and communicate technical data and feasibility information for the port vetting process on a timely basis - Provide supporting technical input relating to: mooring elements (buoys, sea anchors, dolphins, etc.), including the preparation of mooring analysis, port design, navigational access, material logistics, revetments, bulkheads and jetties, as well as landside elements, dredging projects, or dredging assessments
- Provide technical input on ship modifications needed/required to adequately and safely execute port and guest operations, as well as technical input on alignment between vessel access points (shell gates) and pier elements
- Liaises with Supply Chain to assess and plan shore to ship access related to shoreside elements (fenders, gangways, and platforms), tides and wind
- Assists as needed in crafting department strategic goals and objectives
- Reports to Senior Management on the viability of future or current port operational opportunities from a technical and business perspective
- Participates in non-Departmental initiatives by providing technical input to other business unit initiatives (Newbuilding, Commercial Development, Government Relations, etc.)
- Collaborates closely with Land Operations team by communicating requested technical input on a timely and complete basis
- Follows department procedures to ensure effective coordination and communication between customers and/or vendors and the internal Land Operations group
- Prepares and obtain permits from various governmental agencies, as needed, for projects
- Sources and liaise with manufacturers of equipment, including testing
- Plan and coordinate the transportation and delivery of equipment between ports
- Liaise with business resources to arrange transportation and payment.
Trackss and coordinates the routine maintenance and testing of all shoreside elements - Attends and participate in internal Departments meetings
- Attends and participate in external meetings and/or port/vendor visits and communicates to Department Management, as well as other key internal stakeholders, the result of such visits and topics covered
- Leads/assists negotiations with vendors; establishing terms and service levels, performing cost benefit analysis, evaluating operational effectiveness, determining future deployment impact, considering brand image considerations, collaborating/communicating/supporting Nautical/Marine Operations, land operations, facilities management, port modifications, and all related engineering aspects
- Participates in the creation and management annual operating Port Operations budget. Manage financial performance vs. Plan and Forecasts for operations and G&A
- Make recommendations to meet or exceed targets and participate in the analysis and development of accurate forecasts for all expenses associated with Port Operations
- Ensures all port operations are within budget. Review actual cost versus budget and research/investigate any cost variances and take corrective action if necessary
- Participates in assessment and analysis of port operations capital appropriation requests and capital projects and prepare recommendations to executive management committee
- Actively explore and identify opportunities to improve operating performance and financial savings in all ports
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or Masters degree in civil, mechanical or industrial engineering from four-year technical college or university
- Five or more years of related work experience within a large corporation or consulting firm
- Must be able to travel 40-60% of time and travel on weekends and non-peak times possible
- Must possess exceptional communication and organization skills
- Familiarity with project management and systems management
- Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
- Proficient in Windows environment, including e-mail, Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, Visio, AutoCAD
- Must possess excellent presentation and writing skills
