Position Summary

  1. Responsible to provide high quality individualised daily medical care to guests and crew through a clinic service and on-call provision, providing the upmost support to the Doctor in accordance with Company Policies, any National or International standards and in compliance with Public Health or any other prescribed regulations.

Reporting Structure

  1. Reporting to the Doctor.

Safety Duties:

  1. Participates in crew and passenger safety drills according to instructions.
  2. Always complies with the Company’s safety and pollution prevention regulations and operating procedures.
  3. Leads by example by taking care of Health and Safety of self and others.
  4. Ensures that all work equipment, personal protective equipment, chemicals and safety devices are being used correctly.

Education/Experience/Qualifications:

  1. Registered Nurse (Per CLIA-Minimum 3 years’ experience)
  2. Recent Emergency room or critical care background.
  3. Valid ACLS & PALS certification.
  4. Sexual Assault certifications
  5. Valid STCW certification.
  6. Physically and medically fit.
  7. Moral integrity is required.
  8. Public Health, Sanitation and Environmental training courses.
  9. Must have a full knowledge of Public Health rules and regulations.
  10. Public Health, Coast Guard and Port State Control experience.

Language requirements:
Fluent English (verbal, written and technical). English is the working and safety language on board. This also includes the ability to give and receive instructions in verbal and written forms and to effectively and efficiently engage with guests and crew members. Additional languages are considered beneficial.


Computer knowledge:
Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.


Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Required to stand, walk long distances, reaching and sitting. Repetitive motion of bending, going up and down stairs, climbing ladders. Lifting or pushing of up to 50lbs. The position requires overtime work and irregular schedules. Works in all areas of the vessel with noise, light traffic, distracting environments as well as in the medical centre and office environment.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Consent for treatment will be obtained prior to any medical intervention, with the exception of an emergency where consent cannot be obtained before initiating an emergency intervention.
  2. The Nurse will keep the Doctor informed of all medical matters regarding guests and crew members.
  3. The Nurse will dispense appropriate over the counter medications and assist in dispensing prescribed medications, if necessary, as directed.
  4. The Nurse will ensure dosage accuracy in dispensing medications and will dispense medications in a safe manner, with appropriate warnings and precautions reviewed with the patient.
  5. The Nurse will be familiar with the indications, side effects and precautions to be observed for all medications dispensed, including emergency medications in use onboard.
  6. The Nurse will counsel guests and crew members and verify their understanding of the use of any medications provided.
  7. The Nurse will ensure that all guests and crew members are treated confidentially.
  8. The Nurse will maintain all medical center hours as agreed upon with the doctor
  9. The Nurses will share on-call duties, with the on-call nurse carrying the secondary medical center key and the elevator key.
  10. When attending a patient in their cabin, whenever possible, two medical officers should be present.
  11. The Nurse will conduct training in conjunction with the Doctor.
  12. The Nurse will be familiar with and competent in the operation of all equipment in the medical center, including all emergency bags, crash cart as well as reporting any expired medications to the Nurse and Doctor.
  13. The Nurse will maintain accurate records of all aspects of guest and crew member medical management.
  14. The Nurse will ensure that all surgical instruments are appropriately sterilized and ready for use.
  15. The Nurse is responsible for conducting water testing.
  16. The specific duties assigned to the Nurse include: First Aid Kit checks and refill.
  17. The Nurse is to provide clinical leadership and direction to the members of the nursing team.
  18. The Nurse is to provide administrative coordination of the day-to-day functions and operation of the shipboard medical center in collaboration with the shipboard medical team.
  19. The Nurse will provide orientation and guidance to all new nursing staff and participate/support in the orientation of a new Doctor.
  20. The Nurse is to act as a clinical resource, orient and train all members of the shipboard medical team in the use and maintenance of all medical equipment.
  21. The Nurse will promote the importance of maintaining confidentiality of patient medical information.
  22. The Nurse will manage service and maintenance requests for the equipment in the medical center.
  23. The Nurse will ensure routine preventative maintenance of all medical equipment is completed and records of such work are kept on board for audits and documentation purposes.
  24. The Nurse will order medication and supplies to ensure that the medical centre is appropriately stocked, while adhering to all budget guidelines and policies.
  25. The Nurse is responsible for obtaining permission from the medical management company for any purchases made outside the normal supplies requisition process.
  26. The Nurse will see to the completion of a regular inventory of medications, durable goods and equipment that require restock/replenishment, to maintain par levels and manage expired medications.
  27. The Nurse will ensure all controlled substances are secured, dispensed and accounted for, in accordance with flag state requirements, company policies and applicable port authority regulations.
  28. The Nurse will provide oversight of scheduling and coordination of shore side medical appointments, disembarkations and medical ‘sign offs’.
  29. The Nurse will provide administrative oversight of the process for reviewing pre- employment medical exams to ensure that all such physical exams are complete
  30. The Nurse will oversee and participate in the completion of all equipment and supply checklists including: daily, weekly and monthly checklists.
  31. The Nurse will maintain a schedule for routine operations, i.e. crew training, potable water testing. Hand checks of all food handling crew members, first aid kit checks, medical center inventory, inventory of expired medications, requisition of weekly office supplies, acute gastroenteritis (AGE) log and equipment calibration and validation etc.
  32. The Nurse will work collaboratively with the doctor to ensure all applicable mandatory diseases or illness reporting is performed on a timely and complete basis, as required by flag state and port health authorities.
  33. The Nurse will ensure applicable patient logs and reports are collected as required and maintained.
  34. The Nurse will, upon conclusion of their contract, prepare the required documents necessary for review by the on-coming senior nurse, including:
  35. Performs routine and emergency care to guests and crew.
    • A detailed Handover Report
    • A Medical Staff Familiarization form
    • Including scheduled Controlled Substance Count with signing on Nurse.
  36. Responsible for being familiar with the operation and location of all life-saving, fire-fighting and pollution prevention equipment.
  37. Responsible for the medical care of guests and crew in the absence of the Doctor.
  38. Responsible for properly disposing of any hazardous waste generated in the medical center.
  39. Accompanies the Doctor when attending to a female guest or crew member either in the medical center or in the cabin.
  40. Attends medical emergencies onboard as a first responder and takes appropriate action, instructing and guiding medical teams on use of equipment and administering first aid.
  41. Must be able to perform basic life support and advanced cardiac life support.
  42. Applies surgical dressings and performs other types of treatment as prescribed by physicians. Must have the ability to assist with minor surgeries.
  43. Complies with all CDC & Shipsan related medical procedures including data collection, definitions, records, logs, questionnaires, retention and special reports.
  44. Accurately maintains guest and crew medical files.
  45. Administers vaccinations as instructed by the Company.
  46. Accurately completes accident reports.
  47. Carries out drug and alcohol testing under the instruction of the Staff Captain.
  48. Keeps in a good state of repair all lifesaving equipment to ensure a complete state of readiness to meet any emergency requirements.
  49. Accurate completion of log books and other assigned documentation.
  50. Accountable for ensuring that Company, Public Health, National and International standards are maintained and meeting requirements. Reporting to the Doctor any instances where the ship is unable or fails to comply.
  51. Practices good people management, maintaining proper conduct with guests and crew at all times.
  52. Observes and enforces uniform and grooming standards according to Company policies.
  53. The Nurse will be familiar with the Mass Incident Response plan and will review and maintain the secondary medical centre, supplies, and equipment.
  54. All other duties as assigned.

Details

Embarkation will be on June. Experienced in any cruise vessels internationally and all valid STCW certificates are required for this position.
