5.41 System Manager
5.41.1 Authority and Interrelation
• Belongs to the engine department, reporting to the Chief Electrician, Chief Engineer, and liases with Hotel Director.
5.41.2 Responsibility (including but not limited to)
• Understand and abide by all relevant documentation, regulations, guidelines and procedures. Sign copies as instructed by the superior officer to indicate understanding of the same.
• Report any undesired events, unsafe practices or near accidents observed to the superior officer/s and attempt to rectify them if safely possible.
• Perform security related duties as required by the Ship Security Officer.
• Perform all duties as assigned by the chief electrician and Chief Engineer. Main ones being, but not limited to the ones listed below:
o Internet café: Customer support, Performs daily, voyage, and monthly operations as detailed in run books and related documents. Revenue reports and reconciliation. General maintenance
o Users' computers and peripherals: Users support on Windows XP and 2000, All types of hardware and software maintenance, Printers and scanners maintenance
o Server's environment: Working with Windows 2000 server, Windows 2003 Server, Exchange and UNIX
o Servers, Handling specialized property management software like Fidelio, MXP, Micros, POS terminals etc.
o Updating all servers, Working with Active Users Directory, Domain support
o Local network: Knowledge of ship's LAN structure, LAN maintenance, Working with ETH Cat5 and fiber cables (including cabling thru ship), Working with ATM/IP protocols, Configuring Cisco and 3Com routers and switches
o Local and Saturn B phone system: Good knowledge of Alcatel 4400 PBX exchange configuration
o Maintenance of MDF hardware, Maintenance of Omnitel software (working with ports, permissions, prefixes, forwarding…), Telnet CLI configuration, Backup and Restore PBX database, Configuring and troubleshooting of Saturn B satellite phones
o Satellite system: Knowledge of C- and Ku-band antennas, Working with units such as Automatic tracker, modem, LNB-converter, servo motors…, Performing monthly testing and cleaning antenna equipment and dome, Searching for satellite, Ability to calculate Azimuth and Elevation depending on current position
o Broadcast center: Configuring AMX controller and Onix broadcast multiplexer, Handling server and all software related to TV channels, Troubleshooting with channel tuning
o Navigation equipment: GMDSS maintenance – monthly battery testing, troubleshooting, and equipment testing, Radars – configuring, chart updates, troubleshooting, maintenance of hardware, GPS – care of antennas and overall maintenance and testing
o Electronic look system: Excellent skills and prompt reactions in critical situations, Working with Onity encoder and HT24 system, Encoding guest and crew cards
o Reports directly to the Chief Electrician/Chief Engineer for work related issues.
o Reports to the Staff Captain for ship rules and other ship specific issues.
o Works closely with Hotel Director, Financial Officer, Cruise Director, Guest Relation
o Manager and IT Technical Support Department personnel
o User requests will be responded to promptly 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
o Takes direction from Chief Electrician and Hotel Director as to division of responsibilities and assignments.
o Will keep onboard management informed of any IT issues and policies that affect shipboard operations in their areas of responsibility.
o Draw up and follow the planned maintenance system approved by the chief engineer for all equipment under his charge.
o Manage the inventory and control of all spares, stores and tools under his supervision with reports on their status to the chief engineer.
o Housekeeping of the workshop and stores.
o Maintain records of work done and tests on a daily basis and/or as directed.
o Actively participate in all drills, simulations and exercises conducted onboard and impart associated training as instructed by the Master or the chief engineer.
o Assist in the training of staff if called upon to do so.
o Participate in waste management activity if ordered.
o Assist the chief electrician and chief engineer in other tasks and record keeping and other clerical duties as required.
o Will be a member of the Safety Committee or any other official shipboard body set up under the authority of the Master, if called upon to do so.
o Any other duties as delegated by the chief engineer within the scope of the rank.
