5.18.1 Authority and Interrelation

  • Bosun reports to the chief officer. (Staff Captain)
  • He is the representative of all ratings on board, for administrative and disciplinary matters. He represents them in such matters to the chief officer and/or Master.
  • Authorised to supervise staff under his charge and to ensure that all activities are performed safely and efficiently.

5.18.2 Responsibility (including but not limited to)

  • Understand and abide by all relevant documentation, regulations, guidelines and procedures. Sign copies as instructed by the superior officer to indicate understanding of the same.
  • Report any undesired events, unsafe practices or near accidents observed to the superior officer/s and attempt to rectify them if safely possible.
  • Assist the chief officer in maintenance and upkeep of accommodation spaces, deck and hull areas and associated fittings and equipment.
  • Perform duties in the machinery spaces and elsewhere on board (e.g., engine room (no), galley, accommodation spaces, etc.) as instructed by the chief officer’s
  • Allocate work to the crew as instructed by the chief officer.
  • Assist the chief officer in inventory of deck stores and spares and reorder of the same.
  • Prior to entering or leaving port, in consultation with the chief officer, ensure proper working and lubrication of all mooring and anchoring equipment.
  • Assist the chief officer in ensuring that the waste management plan is carried out effectively on board.
  • Attend mooring and anchoring stations during arrival and departure port and ensure the same of the crew involved.
  • Assist the chief officer during cargo (stores) loading and discharging.
  • Ensure understanding and compliance to all applicable mandatory laws, codes, documents and standing orders by all crew under his supervision and identify areas requiring further training or change. These are to be reported to the chief officer.
  • Be responsible for the training and the motivation of the crew, under the instructions of the chief officer.
  • To actively participate in all drills, simulations and exercises conducted onboard and impart training as instructed by the master or chief engineer (Safety Officer).
  • Will be a member of the safety committee or any other official shipboard body set up under the authority of the Master, if called upon to do so.
  • Participate in waste management duties as instructed by his supervising officer.
  • Perform security related duties as required by the Ship Security Officer.
  • Any other duties as delegated by the chief officer within the scope of the rank.
  • Maintain an awareness of environmental and energy efficiency aspects and impacts as relevant to your role, and act as departmental environmental and energy efficiency representative if required (where applicable to the vessel ISO accreditation standard).
